Those who have lost their minds and those who have lost their thoughts do not see even you, the faultless teacher. Thus it is said. The distinction of the teachings is that the Victorious One's teaching obtains happiness as a result of the ease of the path, turns away from the cycle of existence, completely purifies afflictions, does not deceive those who desire liberation, is entirely virtuous, and purifies misdeeds. The teachings of the outsiders are the opposite of these. In the "Praise of the Extraordinary" it says: For what reason is your teaching, which obtains happiness through happiness? Therefore, beings enter into the system of the Lion of Speech. And in the "Praise Worthy of Praise" it also says: What is entering and turning away? And what is the complete purification from all afflictions? That is the difference between the words of you, the hero, and the words of others. This is the only truth, while that is merely a deceptive teaching. What other difference is needed between your words and the words of others? This is entirely virtuous, while that entirely creates obstacles. What other difference is there between your words and the words of others? That which is deluded and nearly deluded by that, this will purify. That is the difference between the words of you, the protector, and the words of others. It is said. From this, one can also know the difference of the Sangha. There are two stages of what should be learned after taking refuge: that which arises from the summary and that which arises from the oral instructions. The first has two sets of four lines. The first set of four lines is relying on a superior individual: As previously explained, relying on a superior spiritual friend, seeing him as the source of all qualities. Taking refuge in the Buddha is taking refuge in the guide, and the practice that is in accordance with that is actually relying on the guide. Listening to the holy Dharma and properly applying the mind: Listening to the Dharma, such as the Sutra Pitaka, spoken by the holy Buddha and the Buddha's Shravakas, as appropriate. Whatever is applied to the mind, the object that stops afflictions is applied to the mind. Taking refuge in the Dharma is holding onto the Dharma of scripture and realization that should be attained, and the practice that is in accordance with that is this. Practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma: Dharma

It is to practice in accordance with what transcends suffering. Taking refuge in the Sangha is to hold as companions those who proceed to Nirvana. The practice that is in accordance with that is to learn in the same way as those who have entered for the sake of liberation. The second set of four, not letting the senses run wild, is that after the senses have gone freely to the objects, the mind follows them, seeing the fault in running wild in the objects, and turning the mind inward. The basis of training should be taken up correctly, which is to take up as much as possible the basis of training established by the Buddha. One should have compassion for sentient beings, because the Victorious One's teaching is distinguished by compassion. Therefore, having taken refuge in that, one should also cherish sentient beings and abandon harm. One should strive to make offerings to the Three Jewels from time to time, which is to make offerings to the Three Jewels every day. There are two that arise from the oral instructions: individual and common trainings. The former has two: prohibitive trainings and accomplishing trainings. The first is, from the Nirvana Sutra: "Whoever goes for refuge to the three, is a truly virtuous layperson; at no time does one go for refuge to other gods. Going for refuge to the sacred Dharma, one is separated from the mind of harming and killing. Also going for refuge to the Sangha, one does not associate with non-Buddhists." As it is said, not going for refuge to other gods, abandoning harming sentient beings, and not associating with non-Buddhists, these three. Among these, the first is, worldly gods such as powerful gods and pervasive gods are not regarded as ultimate refuges, let alone earth lords and nagas who have become pretas. This is because if one does not have faith in the Three Jewels and trusts in them, it is not proper. If one merely seeks them as temporary companions for certain activities that are in accordance with the Dharma, there is nothing impermissible, just as one seeks a patron as a companion for life, or holds the hope of a doctor to cure illness. The second is, for humans and animals, etc., abandoning harm and injury to sentient beings by thought and action, such as beating, binding, imprisoning, piercing the nose, and imposing unbearable burdens. The third is, refuge in the Three Jewels.
