Generating a mind of seeking, as the great master Dignāga said: The beginningless and endless samsara exists within the ocean. The unpleasant ones such as desire, crocodiles devour its body. To whom should I turn for refuge today? As it is said. In short, it is the fear of falling into bad destinies, and the belief that the Three Jewels have the power to protect from them. Therefore, if these two are just lip service, then taking refuge is similar to that. If these two are strong and stable, then taking refuge will also become convincing, so one should strive for these two causes. Based on this, there are two objects of refuge: identifying the object, and the reason why it is worthy of refuge. First, in the "One Hundred and Fifty Praises" it says: To whom there is no fault at all, and in whom all qualities exist in every way, if there is a mind, one should take refuge in it, praise it, respect it, and abide in its teachings. As it is said. Therefore, if there is a wisdom that distinguishes between refuge and non-refuge, then it is reasonable to take refuge in the infallible refuge, the Buddha Bhagavan. This also represents the Dharma and Sangha Jewels, as it is said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the refuge of those who desire liberation. As it is said. There are four reasons why one is worthy of refuge: First, because one is of a very subdued nature and has attained the state of fearlessness. If one has not attained that, like a fallen person relying on a fallen person, one cannot protect others from all fears. Second, because one is skilled in the means of taming those to be tamed in every way. If one does not have that, even if one takes refuge, one's purpose will not be accomplished. Third, because one possesses great compassion. If one does not have that, even if one takes refuge, one will not be protected. Fourth, one is not pleased by all worldly offerings, but is pleased by the offerings of practice. If one does not have that, one will look at past favors and not provide refuge to all. In short, one is liberated from all fears, skilled in the means of liberating others from fears, and full of compassion for all.

The great lord acts without partiality. Someone who benefits all, whether they have shown kindness or not, is worthy of refuge. And this is only found in the Buddha, not in powerful beings like Ishvara. Therefore, only the Buddha is the refuge. Therefore, the Dharma taught by him, and the Sangha of his Shravakas, are also worthy of refuge. Therefore, if you can gain certainty from these teachings in the Compendium and develop a single-minded reliance, it is impossible that you will not be protected. So, generate certainty from the depths of your heart. Because in terms of self-protection, the external limbs or causes are complete and without deficiency, but the internal limb, which is to entrust your mind and take refuge, has not arisen, and that is why there is suffering. Therefore, know that even without requesting, the Buddha, led by great compassion, becomes a helper, and that he has no laziness towards beings. Recognize that this incomparable and excellent refuge resides within your own heart, and take refuge in him. As it says in the Praise of Praiseworthy Deeds: "I am a friend to you who are without protectors, thus I proclaim, with great compassion, you dwell as if embracing all beings. The teacher possesses great compassion, is loving and acts with love, who else is like you who are diligent and without laziness? You are the protector of all sentient beings, the excellent root of all. Because they do not know that you are the protector, beings are drowning in samsara. Whatever is truly taken up, even the lowest can help, the Dharma that helps is only from you, no one else can know. All the powers of the external limbs are complete, you have truly accomplished them, but because the internal powers are incomplete, children suffer." Thus it is said. In what way does one go for refuge? There are four ways mentioned in the Compendium: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, taking vows, and not speaking otherwise. First, going for refuge by knowing the qualities requires remembering the qualities of the refuge, so there are three: the qualities of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The first has four aspects: the qualities of the body, which is to remember the excellent marks and signs of the Buddha. As it says in the Praise with Similes: Your body is adorned with marks.
