The one who is relied upon. The noose of karma from misdeeds, Some beings bound by its firmness, Some live for five thousand years, Some do not die even for ten thousand years. Thus it is said. Some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, and some have a lifespan of ten thousand years, as explained in the commentary. There is no fixed measure for the body in all three lower realms, due to the power of non-virtue, it transforms into various sizes, as stated in the Basis of Objects. Thus, contemplating the sufferings of the lower realms, such as putting one's hand into a fire that has not yet burned out and staying there for a day, or staying in an ice cave without clothes in the winter wind, or going without food and drink for a day and night, or being bitten by mosquitoes and other insects, even this is difficult to endure. How much more so the sufferings of the hot hells and cold hells, and the pretas and animals, where one devours another alive, etc. How can I endure such things? By comparing it to present experiences, one should meditate until a transformation of mind arises with extreme fear and dread. If one knows but does not familiarize it in the mind, or only meditates for a short time, nothing will change. In the Vinaya-vastu, the two sons of Kundgawo's sister were ordained and made to read, but after reading for a few days, they did not read due to laziness. When they were entrusted to Maudgalyayana's son, they acted as before. Kundgawo said, "Make these two disgusted." Maudgalyayana's son took them to a place where people go during the day, and manifested hell beings, and after hearing the sounds of cutting and striking, they went to see. They saw the suffering of cutting, etc., and there appeared two large iron pots boiling, and they said, "Is no one put in here? Thus they spoke. Kundgawo's two nephews, after being ordained, spent their time in laziness, and after death, they will be born here. Thus he spoke. The two were extremely frightened, and thinking that if they knew, they would enter immediately, they went to Maudgalyayana's son and told him everything that had happened. Then, Maudgalyayana's son said, "O two novices, these faults and others arise from laziness, so strive with diligence." Thus he said. The two strove with diligence, and if they remembered hell before eating, they would not eat. If they remembered after eating, they would vomit. Again.
