Like a burnt tree stump, the face is covered with hair, the mouth is extremely dry, and licked with the tongue. There are three aspects to this: External obstacles to food and drink are that when they flow in springs, lakes, and ponds, there are beings holding swords, spears, and short spears who prevent them from leaving the springs, etc., and they see the water as pus and blood and do not want to drink it. Internal obstacles to food and drink are that the mouth is the size of a needle's eye, but the mouth is burning, has tumors, and a large belly, so even if no one else obstructs them, they cannot eat or drink even if they find food and drink. Obstacles to food and drink are that those called "flames of fire" burn everything they eat and drink into flames, and those called "filth eaters" can only eat and drink feces and urine, and can only use unclean, foul-smelling, harmful, and reprehensible things as food and drink. Some cut off their own flesh and eat it, and cannot enjoy clean and good food and drink. Their dwelling place is: In the Commentary on the Treasury, it is said: "The king of the hungry ghosts is Yama." The root of their dwelling place is from the royal palace (Rajgir), five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa (Earth), and the others are derived from there. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Among the hungry ghosts, due to the lack of desire, the suffering that arises is continuous and incurable, and the suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable and should be relied upon. Some hungry ghosts have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and their bellies are as large as mountains, and they are tormented by hunger. They do not have the ability to enjoy even a small amount of unclean waste that is discarded. Some hungry ghosts are skin and bones, naked, like dried palm trees. Some hungry ghosts have flames burning from their mouths, and they can only eat food that falls into their burning mouths. Some inferior races cannot even find pus and feces, blood, and other unclean things, and they fight each other, and can only eat the ripe pus from the tumors that grow from their throats. For the hungry ghosts, in the summer, the moon is also hot, and in the winter, the sun is also cold. These trees without fruit, just by looking at them, can make the rivers dry up." And so on. Among them, the first verse says:

The general and the rest showed the particular sufferings. Toiling is running for food. Fear is the fear of seeing people holding swords, clubs, and lassos. Throwing away "Gyi Nar" means throwing away at will. Burning night means fire burning from the mouth at night. Falling on the burning mouth means seeking any food that burns in the mouth, that is, eating. Like eyes burned by virulent poison, even sweet, cool rivers will dry up. Some see it as filled with dense burning flames of ashes, while others see a river of pus filled with various kinds of worms flowing, as stated in the commentary. It is also said in the Letter to a Disciple: Intolerable thirst, seeing a clear river from afar, wanting to drink and going there, that river turns into hair, fish scales, a mixture of pus and blood, and water filled with mud, blood, and feces. The seasons change, the wind rises, water splashes, the mountain peaks become cool, and sandalwood trees grow in the green forest, but for them, it turns into a forest fire, with dense flames, and many burning logs collapsing, turning into pits. The waves of the water reservoir rise high in fear, and the foam that arises from it shines brightly, but when they go there, it turns into a desolate place filled with gravel, red, rough, red dust storms raging. If they want rain clouds to rise there, what falls from the clouds is a rain of iron arrows, accompanied by smoke and ashes, and diamond hailstones with salt, lightning flashing with golden light, falling on the body like rain. When afflicted by heat, blizzards also turn into heat waves, and when tormented by cold winds, flames also become cold. Due to the complete ripening of extremely unbearable karma, leading to confusion, all these things appear to them upside down. For a mouth the size of a needle's eye, there are many yojanas of belly, unbearable hunger, even if drinking the water of the great ocean, it cannot fill the wide throat, but because of the poison in the mouth, even drops of water will dry up. These words should also be contemplated. The length of life, in "The Nature of Things" and "The Treasury of Knowledge," it is said that taking one month of humans as one day of pretas, they can live to five hundred years. And in "Letter to a Friend," it says, uninterrupted suffering
