May it be auspicious! Furthermore, the lifespans and days and nights of the reviving hells and the other six are the same as those of the desire gods. Therefore, the lifespans of those are the same as the desire gods. The extremely hot, the half-hot, and the non-hot are intermediate kalpas. It is said that the substance of the earth is also the same. The surrounding hells are: Each of the eight hot hells has four walls and four doors. Outside of those, there is an iron fence surrounding them, and that fence also has four doors. At each of those doors, there are four additional sentient being hells: a pit of embers, a swamp of corpses or a swamp that smells like a latrine corpse, a path of razors, and so on, and an impassable river. The first of these is: The pit of embers is about knee-deep. When those sentient beings go to seek a place to dwell, when they place their feet there, all their skin, flesh, and blood are destroyed. When they lift their feet, those are reborn again. The second is: Adjacent to that is a swamp that smells like a latrine corpse. Sentient beings seeking a place to dwell cross over there, and fall there, sinking headfirst. In that swamp, there is a worm called 'sharp-beaked worm' that pierces the skin, flesh, sinews, and bones, and digs down to the soles of the feet. The third is: Adjacent to that swamp is a path filled with razor blades. When sentient beings seeking a place to dwell go there and place their feet, all their skin, flesh, and blood are cut off, and when they lift their feet, those are reborn again. Adjacent to that is a forest of sword-leaved trees. When sentient beings seeking a place to dwell go there and rely on the shade of the trees and sit down, swords fall from the trees, and those swords pierce and cut off their limbs and branches. When those fall there, jackals come and tear them apart from behind and eat them. Adjacent to that is a grove of iron trees, the Shalmali trees. When sentient beings seeking a place to dwell go there, they are driven to climb the trees. When they climb, the thorns point downwards, and when they descend, the thorns point upwards, and those thorns pierce and cut off their limbs and branches. There is a bird there called the 'iron-beaked crow' that sits on their shoulders or heads and pecks out and eats their eyeballs. Those are like a rain of harm from weapons, it is one.

This should be done. The fourth is that in the place adjacent to the Shala forest, there is a place called "Immeasurable River," which is filled with the boiling water of transformation. There, those sentient beings seeking a place to dwell fall into it, going up and down and being boiled. For example, it is like filling a copper pot with water, lighting a great fire, and pouring in beans and so on. On the two banks of that river, some sentient beings sit holding sticks, nets, and fishing nets, and do not allow them to come out. If they are pulled out with a net or fishing net, they are laid face up on the burning ground and asked what they want. They answer, "We know nothing and see nothing, but we are hungry and thirsty." Then, burning iron tongs are put into their mouths, and boiling copper water is poured into their mouths. Those places are also arranged like the foundation. For both nearby and distant beings, there is no certainty of lifespan, as explained therein. However, as long as the karmic force of experiencing those sufferings is not exhausted, they will experience suffering for a long time in those places. The eight cold hells are: located beyond each of the eight great hells, each separated by ten thousand yojanas. From here, thirty-two thousand yojanas down is the Blister Hell, and then every two thousand yojanas there are seven other hells. Among them, the Blister Hell is: due to the striking of a great wind, the entire body shrinks as if blisters have formed. The characteristic of the Bursting Blister Hell is: shrinking as if a blister has burst. The sayings "So Tham Thampa," "Kyi Hud," and "A Chu" are named according to the way they are pronounced. "Cracking like an Utpala flower" means: due to the striking of a great wind, the color turns blue and cracks into five or six petals. The characteristic of "Cracking like a Lotus" is: the color changes from blue to red and cracks into ten or more petals. The characteristic of "Cracking like a Great Lotus" is: the skin becomes very red and cracks into a hundred or more petals. The order, size of the location, and sufferings of those hells are just like the foundation. In the Jataka tales, it is said: "Believing there is no future life, in such a place, darkness and cold winds rise, which will cause diseases that destroy the bones, who would enter there to help me?" Thus, it is said to dwell in darkness.

Also, from the "Letter of Exhortation": The incomparable cold wind penetrates even into the bones, The body shrinks, trembles, and hunches over, squatting in a shivering manner. A hundred blisters arise, and creatures born from the burst blisters, Are eaten and torn apart, pus and blood flowing together. Teeth clench the collar, hair and body hair scatter everywhere. Eyes and ears, and hidden places, are all tormented by harm. The space between body and mind is completely confused, Dwelling in the cold hell, uttering extremely painful cries. Thus it is said. How long do they experience these sufferings? Until those evil deeds are exhausted. That is, in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," it says: The lifespan of beings born in the cold hells should be understood as half of the lifespan of beings born in the great hells. Thus it is said. And, in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, a sutra is quoted: Monks, for example, here in the land of Magadha, there is a sesame seed container of eighty kharis, filled to the brim with sesame seeds. Then, someone takes out one sesame seed every hundred years. Monks, in this way, it would be very quick for that sesame seed container of eighty kharis from the land of Magadha to be completely exhausted. But I do not say that the lifespan of beings born in the blister hells has an end. Monks, twenty blister hells are like one bursting blister hell. From here, it is extensively said, and again, monks, twenty hells that crack like lotuses are like one great hell that cracks like a lotus. Thus it is said, therefore, one must experience it for such a long time. The neighboring hells are located near the hot and cold hells. In the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," it is said that they also exist in the human realm. In the Vinaya-vastu, it is also said that they are located near the shore of a great lake. As it is said in the biography of Gedun Drub. In the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, it is also said: Those sixteen sentient being hells are manifested by the karma of all sentient beings. The neighboring hells are manifested by the individual karma of many, two, or one. There are many different forms of those hells. The location is not fixed, it can be in rivers, mountains, and wilderness areas.
