Generating compassion, from samsara Generating renunciation and seeking liberation, taking refuge strongly out of fear of suffering, etc., is a great collection that includes many key points of practice. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Without suffering, there is no renunciation, therefore the mind should be steadfast. It is also said that the qualities of suffering are: with renunciation, it eliminates arrogance, generates compassion for those in samsara, fears evil and rejoices in virtue. As it is said: I am terrified by fear, and offer myself to Samantabhadra. Thus it is said. These qualities of suffering, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, are spoken of in terms of the suffering that arises in one's own mind. However, it is the same for those who will experience suffering. Thus, thinking about the suffering of the lower realms has three aspects: the suffering of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. The first has four aspects: the great hells of sentient beings, the neighboring hells, the cold hells, and the solitary hells. The first is: Thirty-two thousand yojanas below here is the Reviving Hell, and from there every four thousand yojanas there are seven others. Thus, among the eight, in the first, the Reviving Hell, those sentient beings gather together, and various weapons arising from karma appear in succession, striking each other. Then they faint and fall to the ground, and a voice comes from the sky: May you all be revived. Then they stand up again and strike each other as before, experiencing immeasurable suffering. In the Black Line Hell, those beings born there are measured by the hell guards with black lines in various ways, such as four corners, eight corners, or raindrops, and then they are split and cut with weapons according to the lines drawn by the black lines, experiencing suffering. In the Crushing Hell, when those beings gather together, the hell guards squeeze them between two iron mountains that look like cliffs. Then immediately those two mountains squeeze down, and at that time blood flows profusely from all the gaps. Similarly, sheep, horses, and elephants
