In the mind, at that time, one should contemplate that only the Dharma is the refuge, protector, and companion. As it is said in the Letter to King Kanishka: "When the ripening of past actions occurs, you are completely abandoned, new actions follow you, when the Lord of Death leads you, except for virtue and non-virtue, all travelers return, no one follows you, knowing this, please act virtuously." And Śrī Jagatamitra also said: "How the gods may come to you, when you depart and go to another world, like being destroyed by enemies in a wilderness, alone, without children, not as a queen, without clothes, without friends, without a kingdom, without a bed, although you have immeasurable power, no one sees, no one hears. Only one thing, no one follows behind. In short, even your name, at that time, will be gone, what more to say of others?" Thus it is said. Thus, contemplating the precious human rebirth, which is difficult to obtain and of great meaning, and death, which is difficult to obtain yet easily destroyed, if one does not practice for the sake of future lives and ultimate happiness, then merely for the sake of happiness and the elimination of suffering before death, animals do better than humans, therefore a practice that transcends them is needed. Otherwise, even if one obtains a good rebirth, it is as if one has not obtained it. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Even animals can accomplish it, why seek small things? This precious and complete human body, difficult to obtain, how can it be enslaved by actions?" Therefore, even if it is difficult to arise, one must strive, because it is the foundation of the path. As Geshe Potowa said: "Our key instruction is to contemplate impermanence, dispelling all appearances of this life such as relatives and possessions, knowing that one is alone, without companions, and will go to the next life, thinking that one must not do anything unlawful, in this way one will not be attached to this life. Until this arises in the mind, the path of all Dharmas will be blocked." Dolpopa also said: "In passing, accumulate merit, purify obscurations, pray to the deities and the guru, with a skeleton, contemplate earnestly, thinking that even in a hundred years one will not be born."

He said, since conditioned phenomena do not abide, in what way will they arise? When asked to shift the focus to the lotus, he said to repeat the former. If asked further, he said, continuing to ask will yield nothing. Thus, if the mind is capable, meditate as previously explained. If not, grasp how the three roots align with the nine reasons. Like adorning something being led to the slaughter, repeatedly meditate until you lose interest in the affairs of this life. The topics of relying on a spiritual friend, leisure and endowments, and impermanence, wherever they may be in the scriptures and commentaries, should be understood as practical instructions for that very moment. Practicing in this way, you will easily attain the intentions of the Buddhas, and understand it similarly at other times as well. Second, contemplate how it will be in the next life, and the happiness and suffering of the two types of beings. Since it is certain that death will come swiftly, there is no time to remain in this life. After death, it is not that there is nothing; one must take rebirth. Moreover, there is no rebirth other than into the two realms, so one will be reborn into a good or bad realm. Since there is no autonomy in being born there, but rather one is subject to karma, one will be reborn as thrown by white or black karma. Thus, if I am born in a bad realm, what will I become? One should contemplate the suffering of the bad realms. The venerable Nagarjuna said: Remember the hells, intensely hot and cold, like a single day. Remember also the pretas, emaciated by hunger and thirst. Look upon and remember the animals, with their vast suffering of ignorance. Abandon their causes, and practice the causes of happiness. The human body of Jambudvipa, difficult to obtain, when you obtain it, strive diligently to cut off the causes of the bad realms. Therefore, it is said. Therefore, it is extremely important to meditate on suffering in general in samsara, and especially in the lower realms. Like this, if you think of yourself as falling into an ocean of suffering, you will turn away from pride and arrogance due to disillusionment; seeing suffering as the result of non-virtue, you will be extremely cautious in avoiding sins and downfalls; because you do not want suffering, you will desire happiness, and seeing happiness as the result of virtue, you will rejoice in practicing virtue; and based on your own experience, you will also (have compassion for others).
