same. If you think you will die today every day, or even think you are likely to die today, you will do things for the next life of where to go, and you will not prepare to live in this life. If this thought does not arise, you will think of living in this world, so you will prepare to live there, but you will not do things for the next life. For example, if you think you will live in one place for a long time, you will prepare to live there; if you think you will not live there and go to another place, you will prepare for where to go. Therefore, you must develop the thought of dying every day. There are three points to this. Thinking that the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa is uncertain is: Generally speaking, the lifespan of those with unpleasant voices is certain. Although others are not certain to live to their respective lifespans, most are certain. However, the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa is extremely uncertain. First of all, there have been cases where lifespans were immeasurable, and now that they have just reached the age of ten, they have to make long-term plans, and it seems that it is uncertain who will die, whether old, young, or middle-aged. As it says in the Abhidharmakosha: "Here, the shortest uncertain lifespan is ten years, and the first is immeasurable." And as it says in the Samyuktagama Sutra: "Many people are seen in the morning, and some are not seen in the afternoon. Many people are seen in the afternoon, and some are not seen in the morning." And "Many men and women, even in their prime, will die, so to say this person is young, what can you rely on to live? Some will die in the womb, and some will die at birth, and some will die while toddling, and some will die while running around, some are old, some are young, and some are in their prime, and gradually they will all die, just like ripe fruits will fall." Thus it is said. For teachers or friends, etc., who have not lived to the end of their lives, due to sudden internal and external causes of death, when their wishes have not been fulfilled, you should often remember what you have seen and heard. You yourself are certainly such a thing with dharma, you must think like this repeatedly, so as to generate the thought of death. Thinking that there are many causes of death and few causes of survival is: this life has many harms from sentient and non-sentient beings. For example, humans and non-humans who have become ghosts and the like will harm in various ways, and animals will harm the body and life.

There are many ways in which harm is done, and likewise, one should carefully consider the ways in which harm from internal diseases and external elements befall. Furthermore, one's own body must be composed of the four elements, and these elements harm each other. When the elemental realms are unbalanced, increasing and decreasing, they give rise to diseases and take away life. These harms are innate, so the body and life are unreliable. As it is said in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra: "The awareness of death is that this life is always surrounded by many hostile enemies, diminishing moment by moment, with nothing increasing." And in the Ratnavali, it is said: "The Lord of Death dwells within conditions, like a candle in a red wind." And in the Suhrllekha, it is said: "Life is struck by many harmful winds, impermanent like a bubble in water. It is most wondrous indeed, if one has the chance to awaken from the sleep of inhaling and exhaling." And in the Catuhsataka, it is said: "Because of lacking power, all phenomena, called aggregates, are of the nature of arising and ceasing. To say that there is happiness in contradictory things is unreasonable in every way." Thus it is said. Because it is a time when the five degenerations are very prevalent, the accumulation of powerful virtuous deeds that can lead to long life is extremely rare, and the potency of medicines such as food is also small, so the power to subdue diseases is small. It is also difficult to digest what is enjoyed, and the power to increase the great elements of the body is diminished, so it is difficult to digest, and even if it is digested, it is of little help. The accumulation of merit is small, and misdeeds are very great, so recitations and so on have become less effective, and prolonging life and so on is very difficult. There is no condition for living that does not become a condition for dying. In order not to die, one seeks food, shelter, and friends, but these things, such as eating too much or too little, or enjoying unsuitable things, and the collapse of dwellings, and being deceived by friends, become conditions for dying. Therefore, there is no condition for living that does not become a condition for dying. Furthermore, living itself is entering into the meaning of death, so the conditions for living
