The four touch the sky and destroy the earth, grinding grass, trees, tree gum, branches, all leaves, and all sentient beings and creatures into powder. It is not easy to escape quickly from this, or to resist with strength, or to resist with wealth, or to resist with objects, mantras, and medicines. Great King, similarly, these four great fears will come. It is not easy to escape quickly from them, or to resist with strength, or to resist with wealth, or to resist with objects, mantras, and medicines. What are the four? Old age, sickness, death, and decay. Great King, old age destroys vigor and comes, sickness destroys health and comes, decay destroys all perfection and comes, and death destroys life and comes. It is not easy to escape quickly from them, or to resist with strength, or to resist with wealth, or to pacify with objects, mantras, and medicines. So it is said. Karmapa said: Now we need to fear death, we need not to be afraid at the time of death, but we are just the opposite, we are not afraid now, but we will scratch our chests at the time of death. Thinking that life has no increase, only decrease, and it is continuous, from the moment of entering the womb, if we protect ourselves well and happily now, then today we can live to be a hundred years old or a little more. As it is said, that is the longest it can be. Even if we can live that long, the consumption of life in between is very fast. Years are consumed by the passing of months, months are consumed by the passing of days, and days are consumed by the passing of day and night. These are also consumed by the passing of morning and so on, so the total amount of life is short, and much of it has already been consumed, and there is no increase in the remaining life even for a moment, but the decrease is constantly present day and night, therefore, it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Day and night do not stop, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is no additional day to add, how can I not die?" So it is said. We should also think about this from many metaphors, such as when weaving cloth, the shuttle only passes through one thread at a time, but it is quickly woven, and when leading sheep and other animals to be slaughtered.

With each step, we move closer to death, just as a swift river flows continuously, or water flows from a steep cliff, life is rapidly exhausted. Just as a shepherd drives livestock with a stick, causing them to involuntarily return to their dwellings, old age and sickness involuntarily lead us to the Lord of Death. We should practice these truths from many perspectives. As it says in the Compendium: For example, when a loom is stretched, and the shuttle is inserted again and again, just as the shuttle reaches the bottom, so too is the life of people. For example, those destined to be killed, with each step they take, they get closer to the place of execution, so too is the life of people. The swift river flows continuously, unable to reverse, similarly, the life of people passes, and there is no turning back. Life is short and full of suffering, and it quickly vanishes, like writing in water with a stick. For example, a shepherd holding a stick, drives the livestock back to their dwellings, similarly, old age and sickness lead people to the Lord of Death. As the scriptures say. Lord Atisha also went to the water's edge to practice impermanence, saying, "This water dripping away, how wonderful," and practiced in this way. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it also says: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance, the life of beings passes like lightning in the sky, as swift as water flowing from a steep cliff. The sutra illustrates with many metaphors. Therefore, if there is even a slight trace of reflection in the mind, then all external things show impermanence. As it is said, we should contemplate impermanence in connection with many things, and by repeatedly contemplating, certainty will arise. It is useless to only think a little and not achieve results. Karmapa said: Saying "I thought but there were no results," when did you think? During the day you are idle, and at night you are sound asleep, don't lie. At the end of life, we will be destroyed by the Lord of Death and go to the next world, not only that, but during that time, whether walking, standing, or lying down, life is decreasing, and there is no moment when it is not passing. From the moment of entering the womb, without stopping even for a moment, we are always facing the next world.
