The sharp blade cuts here. (འདིར་གཅོད་པ།) The Lord of Death, Yama, cannot even see and departs. (འཆི་བདག་རྒྱལ་པོ།) It is also said: Having seen old age and the suffering of disease, and death, which is separation from consciousness, With steadfast mind, he abandoned the home that is like a prison. Who among ordinary people can renounce desires? In short, the time to accomplish the meaning of a great person is only when one has obtained the special support of leisure and endowment. Most of us dwell in the lower realms, and even when we occasionally come to the higher realms, we are mostly in places without leisure, so we cannot find opportunities to practice the Dharma in those places. Even when we obtain a support that is sufficient for practice, we do not practice the Dharma properly because we still think that we will not die. Therefore, clinging to the side of not dying is the door to all decline, and its antidote, remembering death, is the door to all perfections. Therefore, for such people, do not think that this is the practice of those who do not need to practice other profound Dharmas, nor should you think that even if you want to practice, you should only practice it slightly at first, and that it is not suitable as a long-term practice. From the depths of your heart, generate conviction that remembering death is necessary in the beginning, middle, and end, and strive to practice it. Third, what kind of mind should be generated when remembering death? Because of strong attachment to relatives and so on, fear arises from the fear of separation from them. This is the way ordinary people who have not trained in the path fear death, so this is not what we should generate here. So, what should we fear? Because all the bodies we have taken under the influence of karma and afflictions are inevitably subject to death, even if we fear death, we cannot prevent it for the time being. However, we should fear death if we have not prepared for the next life, have not prevented the causes of falling into the lower realms, and have not accumulated the causes of obtaining higher rebirth and definite goodness. If we think of these things and fear them, then it is possible to strive to accumulate these causes, so that we will not be afraid at the time of death. If we have not accumulated these causes, then in general we will not be able to escape from samsara, and in particular we will fall into the lower realms, so we will be filled with regret at the time of death because of fear. As it is said in the Jataka: Even if you try your best to protect it, you cannot stay. What is the use of fear and cowardice for what cannot be remedied? Thus, observing the laws of the world, people regret having committed evil deeds.

Now translate. Good deeds have not been done well and completely. There is concern that suffering will arise in the next life. One becomes bewildered by the fear of death. What makes my mind regretful, I don't remember doing that at all. White deeds have also been extremely practiced. If one abides in the Dharma, who will fear death? Thus it is said. The Four Hundred Verses also say: Thinking in the mind that I will die, for whom it is certain, he has completely abandoned fear, how can he fear the Lord of Death? Thus it is said. Therefore, one must repeatedly contemplate impermanence, thinking that the body and possessions will surely be quickly separated. If one contemplates, there will be no clinging to not being separated from them, because of the cessation of clinging, there will be no mental suffering caused by separation from them, and there will be no fear of death. Fourth, how to cultivate mindfulness of death? It should be cultivated through three roots, nine reasons, and three kinds of determination. Among them, there are three: contemplating that one will surely die, contemplating that it is uncertain when one will die, and contemplating that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma can help. The first has three aspects: contemplating that the Lord of Death will surely come, and that it cannot be prevented by circumstances. No matter what kind of body is obtained, death will come. In the Collection on Impermanence it says: Whether it is a Buddha, a Pratyekabuddha, or the Shravakas of the Buddhas, if they also abandon this body, what need is there to mention ordinary people? Thus it is said. No matter where one lives, death will come. It says there: Where is there a place to abide where death cannot reach? It is not in the sky, not in the ocean, not even if one enters into the crevices of the mountains. Thus it is said. In the past and future times, there is no difference in how beings are destroyed by death. It says there: How many have come and will come, all abandon this body and depart, the wise realize that all these will be destroyed, abide in the Dharma, one must practice. Thus it is said. One cannot escape the Lord of Death by running away, nor can one prevent it with mantras and so on. In the Advice to the King it says: For example, a great mountain coming from four directions, hard, stable, having a core, not damaged, not broken, without gaps, extremely hard, completely dense
