It is so. Therefore, intermediate existence is merely led by the messengers of sickness and old age to go towards death. Therefore, one should not rejoice in the state of being alive, thinking that one can stay without going to the next world. For example, just as one should not rejoice in the stage of going through the air before falling to the ground when falling from the top of a high cliff. Moreover, it is quoted in the commentary of the Four Hundred: "The hero of men, on the first night, where the world dwells in the womb, from then on, that every day, without delay, goes to the presence of the Lord of Death." And, in the words of Preventing the Four Distortions, it is also said: "One who has fallen from the top of a high mountain to the ground, when he is destroyed, will he experience happiness in the air? From birth onwards, constantly running towards death, how can sentient beings obtain happiness in the intermediate stage?" It is said. These show that death is certain to come quickly. Even when one is alive, one does not have time to practice Dharma, and one must think about death. Even if one can live to the limit of longevity mentioned earlier, one cannot have time to practice, because many lives have passed meaninglessly, and half of the remaining time is occupied by sleep, and many other times are wasted by other distractions. Moreover, once youth has passed and one has reached the stage of old age, the strength of body and mind declines, and even if one wants to practice Dharma, one does not have the ability to accomplish it, so there are very few opportunities to practice Dharma. From entering the womb, half of it is covered by sleep. Ten years is childhood. Twenty years is old age, which is also occupied by sorrow, groaning, pain, discomfort, and quarrels. The various diseases that arise from the body also occupy hundreds and thousands of times. It is said. And, in the words of Preventing the Four Distortions, it is also said: "These people, even if their lives are extremely long, are only a hundred years. Among them, the first is childhood, and the last is old age, which is spent meaninglessly. Sleep and sickness, etc., destroy all hope of not having time to practice. How much time is left for people living in comfort?" It is said. Chakawa also said: "Six years"

If one is interrupted by eating, sleeping, and sickness, then there is not even five years spent truly in Dharma practice, they say. Thus, all the perfections of this life are like enjoying happiness in a dream for a moment, and like remembering after waking up, at the time of death they will only become objects of remembrance. Since the enemy of death is unavoidable and will certainly come, why be delighted in the deceptions of this life? Thinking thus, one should resolve to practice Dharma and make many vows. As it says in the Jataka: Alas! The world is full of afflictions. Abiding is unstable, joy does not last. Even the glory of this lotus will become something to be remembered. It is amazing that beings dwell in such a state without fear! All paths are blocked by the Lord of Death. Yet they rejoice and indulge without concern. The enemies who inflict harm, sickness, aging, and death, are powerful and cannot be resisted, even though they are present. If one is certain to go to the next world in misery, what mind would think to delight in this? And as it says in Kaniska's Letter: The Lord of Death is without compassion. He destroys youth in vain. Knowing that one will be killed, what wise person would indulge in carelessness? Therefore, before the unbearable arrow of the fearless and mighty one is released, strive for your own benefit. Thus, think. Second, contemplate that there is no certainty when death will come: It is certain that death will come from today until one hundred years from now. But it is not certain on which day it will come, so it is not certain whether one will die or not on a day like today. However, one must take the side of death in one's mind and generate the thought that one will die today. If one thinks that one will not die today, or thinks that one probably will not die, and takes the side of not dying in one's mind, then one will prepare to stay in this life, and one will not prepare for the next life. Therefore, in the meantime, if one is seized by the Lord of Death, one will have to die with sorrow. If one prepares for death every day, then many things for the next world will be accomplished, and even if one does not die, it is good to do so. If one dies, then it is especially necessary to do so. For example, if a powerful enemy who will inflict great harm on you is certain to come between now and a certain time, but you do not know on which day he will come, then you must be wary of him every day.
