然于四方遍寻觅,无 refuge(藏文:སྐྱབས,梵文天城体:शरण,梵文罗马拟音:śaraṇa,汉语字面意思:救护)见未得,绝望颓丧极哀戚。于此无 refuge(藏文:སྐྱབས,梵文天城体:शरण,梵文罗马拟音:śaraṇa,汉语字面意思:救护)之境,尔时我将何所为?

One day, he was taken to another place of amusement, and hearing the sound of lutes and other instruments transformed by the gods from one direction, he went to see, and saw that the palace without the son of the gods was filled with goddesses. He asked the reason why the son of the gods was not there, and they replied, "The two nephews of Ananda (ཀུན་དགའ་བོ།) became monks and practiced diligently, and after they died, they were reborn here." The two were very happy to hear this, and told Maudgalyayana (མོའུ་འགལ་གྱི་བུ།), "The two novices, because of these benefits and other benefits obtained from diligent practice, should practice diligently!" After saying this, while practicing diligently, when receiving the precepts, it was also said, as mentioned before, that one is reborn from the happy realms to the miserable realms from the truly authentic precepts. The venerable one asked, "Will we also die and transmigrate from among gods and humans, and then be reborn in the three lower realms?" The two beautiful-faced ones said, "As long as the afflictions in the five realms of samsara are not cut off, one must wander in samsara like a chain of buckets being passed along." The two were disgusted to hear this, and requested, "Please explain the Dharma that will prevent us from creating afflictions in the future." Maudgalyayana explained the Dharma to them, and they attained the state of Arhat. Therefore, one should prevent laziness, generate diligence in practicing the path, and encourage the mind to attain liberation. The root cause of attaining liberation is praising the contemplation of suffering, so regarding its oral instructions, even when the Buddha was alive, there was no more excellent teaching than this. Here, the way in which the minds of small and medium individuals arise in sequence is very clear. Until such a thought arises, one must continuously strive to practice. Neu Zurpa (སྣེའུ་ཟུར་པ།) also said, "One should examine the causes of being born in those places, whether one has created them before or not? Whether one is creating them now or not? Whether one intends to create them in the future or not? If one has created them before, or is creating them now, or intends to create them in the future, then one will go there. If one is born there, what should I do at that time? Can I do it?" Thinking in this way, either one's head becomes hot, or one sits on the ground, sometimes getting up and sometimes falling down, with no way to stop it, one should generate a mind of fear and dread when thinking about these things. This seems to be the key, because now we have a precious human body with leisure and endowments, if we think in this way, we can purify the sins accumulated in the past, reduce the chances of falling into the lower realms in the future, and remember the good deeds accumulated in the past with a strong desire.

Onlam's translation has spread a lot and entered many new doors, so every day should be used to make leisure time meaningful. If you don't think about these things now, when you fall into the lower realms, you won't even find a refuge to protect you from those fears. At that time, you won't have the power of wisdom to choose what to do and what not to do. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "When I have the opportunity to practice virtue, but I have not done so, when I am blinded by all the sufferings of the lower realms, what will I do then?" It also says: "Who will skillfully save me from this great fear and suffering?" With eyes wide open in terror, I diligently search in all four directions. But searching in all four directions, I find no refuge and become extremely despondent. In this place where there is no refuge, what will I do then? Therefore, the victorious one, the protector of beings, strives diligently to save beings, and has the power to dispel all fears, I now take refuge in that venerable one. So it is said. These are just rough outlines, the details are in the Mindfulness Sutra, so you must read it, and read it repeatedly, and after reading it, you must contemplate it. Secondly, there are two ways to seek happiness in the next life: entering the gate of the Dharma, practicing the supreme refuge; generating the root of all happiness and well-being - faith. The first aspect has four points: the cause of taking refuge, what one relies on; the object of refuge, what one relies on; the manner of taking refuge, how much one relies on; and the order of what one should learn after taking refuge. The first point is: Generally speaking, there are many causes, but here, as mentioned before, because one cannot stay in this life and dies quickly, and after death one has no autonomy over where one is reborn, but is subject to karma. Karma is also as stated in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Just as in the dark night, in the thick clouds, a flash of lightning shines brightly for a moment, so by the power of the Buddha, in a hundred paths, people temporarily generate the intention of merit and wisdom. Therefore, why is virtue always weak, and evil is powerful and extremely unbearable." As it says, because white karma is weak and black karma is very powerful, thinking about the situation of falling into the lower realms, fear and dread arise, and thus one takes refuge.
