It is said in the excellent Compendium of Trainings and Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior. If we summarize the benefits of what is said in this way, there are two: temporary benefits and ultimate benefits. First, there are two aspects to temporary benefits: not falling into the lower realms and being born in the higher realms. If that mind arises, then the many causes of lower realms previously accumulated are purified, and the causes of later accumulation are cut off. The causes of higher realms previously accumulated are taken by it and greatly increase, and those newly created are also motivated by it, so there is no end to exhaustion. The ultimate meaning of liberation and omniscience is also easily accomplished by relying on that mind. If there is no genuine desire to obtain the temporary and ultimate benefits beforehand, then these benefits arise from the mind of enlightenment, so even if you say that you should strive to generate that mind, it will only become empty words, which is very clear if you examine your own mind. Therefore, in order to generate the desire to obtain the two benefits of higher status and definite goodness, one must cultivate the thoughts common to small and medium-sized people. In this way, after the desire to obtain the two benefits has arisen, when one begins to meditate on the mind that has benefits, one must generate the root of that mind, loving-kindness and great compassion. Moreover, if you think about how you wander in samsara, lacking happiness and tormented by suffering, then for someone who does not move a single hair, it is impossible for the situation to arise where they cannot bear the lack of happiness and torment of suffering when other sentient beings wander in samsara. As it is said in Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: "For those sentient beings, before, for their own sake, such a thought has not even arisen in a dream, how can it arise for others?" Therefore, in the stage of a small person, think about how the suffering of the lower realms falls on oneself, and in the stage of a medium person, think about how even in the heavens there is suffering and no peaceful happiness. Then, contemplate the sentient beings who have become relatives in the same way as one's own experience, which will become the cause of generating loving-kindness and compassion, and from that, the mind of enlightenment will arise, so cultivating the thoughts common to small and medium-sized people is the way to generate a genuine mind of enlightenment, not leading to another wrong path. Likewise, that

Secondly, striving through various means of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, such as taking refuge and contemplating karma and its effects, will all become preliminaries to bodhicitta, methods for training the mind, and the seven-branch offering, including taking refuge. Therefore, these should also be understood as methods for generating that mind. Here, the guru should skillfully explain how the teachings of the Lesser and Middling Persons become branches for generating the unsurpassed bodhicitta, and the disciple should also gain certainty about this. By reminding each other and remembering these, it is extremely important to train them as branches for generating bodhicitta. If this is not done, the path of the Great Person and the individual paths will become unrelated, and without reaching the actual path of the Great Person, there will be no certainty about bodhicitta, thus becoming an obstacle to generating that mind, or in the meantime, one will degenerate from great meaning. Therefore, effort should be made in this. Thus, having trained in the paths of the Lesser and Middling Persons, and having trained well as explained in the context of the Great Person, be sure to generate genuine bodhicitta in the mindstream. Then, in order to stabilize that mind, first perform the uncommon refuge, and then perform the aspiration ritual. Having taken hold of the aspiration ritual, strive to train in its precepts. Then, in order to study the conduct of a bodhisattva, such as the six perfections and the four ways of gathering disciples, extensively train in the desire to learn. When the desire to learn arises from the depths of your heart, be sure to take pure vows of entering the bodhisattva path. Then, pledge your life not to be defiled by root downfalls, and also strive not to be defiled by other minor and medium transgressions and misdeeds. If you are defiled, then purify them well according to the methods of confession as taught. Then, generally study the six perfections, and especially, in order to be able to use the mind as desired on virtuous objects, train well in the nature of calm abiding—meditation. The Lamp for the Path says, "To generate clairvoyance, diligently cultivate calm abiding, for by it, accomplishments are perfected." This is just an example. In other instances, Lord Atiśa himself also said that calm abiding should be cultivated in order to generate insight, so calm abiding should also be cultivated for this purpose. Then, in order to cut the bonds of clinging to the duality of self
