If calm abiding is not accomplished, it is impossible to achieve; if calm abiding is obtained, it is impossible to induce non-conceptuality through analytical meditation. What was said above is based on the assumption that the exception is abandoned, before it is accomplished. In short, before calm abiding is accomplished, it is impossible to achieve calm abiding by alternately practicing calm and analytical meditation, and finally practicing calm meditation. If calm abiding is accomplished, before insight is accomplished, it is impossible to induce a stable state of one-pointedness by one's own power through analytical meditation. Therefore, the analytical meditation itself, which involves extensive analysis through discriminating wisdom, obtaining a stable state of concentration, will only occur after insight is obtained, so the union also begins from that point. Therefore, one should not mistake the combination of merely analyzing the meaning of selflessness in a stable state of concentration, with the subtle aspects of non-conceptuality disappearing, like a small boat floating on calm water, for the union of calm abiding and insight. The way to unite calm abiding and insight in this way should be understood as it is stated in those authoritative texts, and one should not trust other fabricated explanations. Through these, it seems necessary to distinguish many differences in the way of cultivating calm abiding and insight, but I have not written it for fear of too many words. Now, I will briefly explain the general meaning of the path: First, the root of the path lies in the way of relying on a spiritual friend, so its essence must be determined. Then, if a genuine desire to extract the essence from leisure arises, it will motivate you to practice continuously from within. In order to generate this desire, one should meditate on the aspects of leisure and endowment. Then, if the mind of pursuing the interests of this life has not been transformed, a strong pursuit of the next life will not arise. Therefore, one should strive to meditate on impermanence, that the body will not remain for long after being obtained, and the way of wandering in the lower realms after death. At that time, because a genuine mind of remembering fear arises, one should generate conviction from the depths of one's heart in the qualities of the Three Jewels, abide in the common refuge vows, and learn their precepts. Then, from the great foundation of all white dharmas, the faith in karma and its effects, one should generate and stabilize it from many aspects, strive to adopt and abandon the ten virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and constantly enter the path of the four powers. In this way, it is the Dharma of the person of small capacity.

When all the stages of practice are thoroughly mastered, one should contemplate the faults of samsara in general and in particular, and how to turn the mind away from samsara as a whole. Then, clearly recognize the nature of karma and afflictions, the causes from which samsara arises, and generate a genuine desire to abandon them. One should develop a true understanding of the three trainings, the path to liberation from samsara, and especially strive to keep the vows of individual liberation that one has taken. In this way, when the practices of the intermediate being are thoroughly mastered, one should consider how one has fallen into the ocean of samsara, and that other mother-like beings have also gone the same way, and thus cultivate the mind of enlightenment, which has its root in love and compassion, and strive to generate it. Without it, practicing the six perfections and the two stages, etc., would be like building on a foundation without a foundation. If a slight experience arises in the mind, take the Bodhisattva vows, strive to learn the precepts of the Bodhisattva vows, and strengthen the aspiration. Then, listen to the vast conduct of the Bodhisattvas, know the boundaries of stopping evil and doing good, and generate a strong desire to learn them. When these intentions arise, take the vows of entering the Bodhisattva path, and study the six perfections that ripen one's own mind and the four means of attraction that ripen the minds of others. In particular, one should risk one's life to protect the root downfalls with great diligence, and strive not to be defiled by minor and medium transgressions and misdeeds, and even if defiled, one should strive to repent. Then, because it is necessary to especially study the last two perfections—wisdom and means—one should become proficient in the method of cultivating meditation and practice samadhi. Strive to generate in the mind a pure view of the two selflessnesses, free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation, and apply the insights gained to practice, knowing the pure method of cultivation and cultivating it. Such meditation and wisdom are called calm abiding and insight, but in reality they are not separate from the last two perfections, but arise in the process of taking the Bodhisattva vows and learning their precepts. Similarly, when practicing the lower stages, the desire for the higher stages will become stronger and stronger; when listening to the higher stages, the desire to practice the lower stages will become stronger and stronger. If this happens, you have grasped the key point. If there is nothing in the previous practices, but only a few mental states and a rough understanding of the view, then there is no power.
