If one thinks it is impossible to distinguish, then through meditation, when the coarse appearances that appear as the two, object and subject, cease, like a clear sky, the mind has the characteristics of being aware, clear, and pure, and remains for a long time like a butter lamp unmoved by the wind. The appearances of outer and inner objects appear in the mind like rainbows or thin smoke, and remain for a long time. In the face of mental consciousness, when the mind focuses on whatever appears as the object being grasped, even a slight focus becomes unbearable and disintegrates into purity. Moreover, at first, this appears in coarse external objects such as forms and sounds, and when accustomed to it, eventually the same kind of reasoning disappears like a bubble even for the subject, awareness, and experience. Even then, if the mind focuses on it, even a slight focus becomes unbearable, and so on. However, this cannot be established as having attained the view of the two-without-self-nature reality, nor can the vague appearances be established as having realized the meaning of illusion as explained in Madhyamaka. Even if one does not turn one's mind towards the view and cultivates the state for a long time, there will be many such appearances. Like this, the meaning of illusion is that, as explained before, it must arise based on the certainty of reasoning that decides that there is no self-nature, and the two, appearance that is undeniably established by conventional valid cognition. In the mind, the appearances of forms and so on appear in a form that is thin and very clear like a rainbow, which is free from the touch of obstruction and heaviness, and although it is not something with obstruction and heaviness, it is merely a collection of two, appearance and luminosity. Therefore, there is absolutely no certainty that such a certainty is without self-nature. Because the self-nature to be refuted and the touch of obstruction are grasped as one, and then the name of no self-nature is given. If it is not like that, but such a thing is considered to be the meaning of illusion and falsehood as explained in Madhyamaka, then rainbows and thin smoke will be grasped as the basis of distinction, and the conceptual thought that grasps them as having self-nature will not arise. Because the certainty that there is a basis of distinction is itself the certainty that appearance is without self-nature. Moreover, if the touch of obstruction is grasped as the basis of distinction, then it is impossible to directly lead to the certainty that it is without self-nature, because the certainty of the basis of distinction

Because it clings to the fact that it inherently possesses self-nature. Therefore, when forms and the like appear in this way, they appear in a thin and clear manner, and clinging to the reality of how these objects abide, without the slightest refutation of the appearance of the objects, it is therefore not like the meaning of illusion. When one has previously obtained a pure view and has not forgotten it, these will appear like illusions, as has been said before. In the Lamrim transmitted from Geshe Gonpawa, the way in which the realization of emptiness arises is considered to be as follows: First, meditate on the selflessness of persons. Then, with mindfulness and awareness, grasp the meaning of the selflessness of phenomena and meditate on it. Moreover, if a session is too long, it will be difficult to maintain mindfulness and awareness, and one will sometimes be agitated and sometimes dull, so the effect will be small. Therefore, divide each of the four sessions of morning, noon, evening, and dawn into four smaller sessions, and meditate for sixteen sessions a day. Interrupt from the feeling of clarity or experience. After meditating in this way, if you feel that you have not meditated for a long time, and you look and see that time and the sun have passed quickly, then the mind has been grasped. If you feel that you have meditated for a long time, and you look and see that nothing has passed, then the mind has not been grasped. When the mind is grasped, the afflictions in the mind will be less, and one will even feel that sleep will not arise. After that, if one can persevere through each session, such as in the morning, then a samadhi possessing four characteristics will arise: Non-conceptualization means that when one is in equipoise, one does not even feel the breath going in and out, and the breath and conceptualization become subtle. Clarity means that it is no different from the clear sky at noon in autumn. Clearness means that it is like the clearness when water is poured into a pure container and placed in the sun to be viewed. Subtlety means that when one looks at it in the state of those three characteristics, one will even see one half of a hair tip that has been split in two. Such a thing is in accordance with the arising of non-conceptual wisdom. But in relation to non-conceptual wisdom, because its self-nature is conceptualization, it is said to be inverted. As it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "In accordance with and inverted." This is how it is explained. As stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga, even the best meditations on emptiness by ordinary beings are in accordance with and inverted.
