It seems necessary to rely on this. Without a doubt, one should search for the view of either of these two as it appears in their respective treatises. That is, the method of searching by relying on the treatises of the noble father and sons has already been explained. Even if one follows the noble Asanga, one should grasp only that, that is, the grasper and the grasped are different entities, therefore they are empty in all aspects. However, for children, these appear as different entities, and just as they appear, they grasp as true the objects of imputation—the completely imputed, and on the dependent nature, they are completely refuted by scripture and reasoning, thereby gaining firm conviction in the perfect nature of non-duality, and then placing the view upon it, the calm abiding, and analyzing and meditating with individual observation, these two must be done. Even if one has such an understanding, if one does not place the view upon it at the time of meditation, merely not thinking about it will not count as meditating on emptiness. The way to ascertain the view of that system is very clear, and the meaning after ascertainment, that is, the way to cultivate calm abiding and insight separately and the way to combine them, is very clear in the instructions of the Perfection of Wisdom, so one should look there. If one can understand this system well and meditate as it appears in its treatises, that is also very wonderful. In the Great Vehicle scriptures, there are many instances where even a single verse summarizes the profound meaning, but there are also many instances where it is not revealed. For what is not revealed, one must lead from the revealed treatises; for what is not extensive, one must also lead from the extensive treatises. Similarly, one must also understand the extensive aspects. One should not cling to any one side that lacks profundity or extensiveness. Considering this, in the complete characteristics of a guru who guides the path, it is often said that one should be proficient in all vehicles. Third, to briefly summarize the key points of cultivation: As previously stated, through obtaining the definitive view, in a way similar to determining that the basis of the arising of the grasping of "I" and "mine"—the person and what belongs to him—is without inherent existence, one should analyze extensively with the wisdom of individual observation, and finally generate the power of conviction in that meaning. One should alternately practice calm abiding and the analysis of the wisdom of individual observation without interruption. At that time, due to too much analytical meditation, the component of calm abiding will decrease.

Then one should do much settling meditation, keeping the posture as it is. Through the power of doing much settling meditation, the settling becomes strong, and if one does not like to examine and does not examine, then the certainty about suchness will not be stable and strong. If that does not arise, then the imputation of clinging to the existence of the two selves, which is the opposite of certainty, will not cause much harm. By means of doing much analytical meditation, one should meditate equally on both calm and insight. In the final stage of meditation, it says: Furthermore, when one meditates on insight and wisdom becomes very strong, then because calm abiding is less, just as a lamp is placed in the wind, the mind is agitated and one will not see that very clearly. Therefore, at that time one should meditate on calm abiding. Even if the part of calm abiding is large, one will not see that very clearly, just like a person who is overcome by sleep. Therefore, at that time one should also meditate on wisdom. How to do the preliminary, the conclusion, and the breaks between sessions should be understood as explained in the case of the small person. In that way, when meditating on the meaning of selflessness, one should identify the occurrence of sinking and excitement, and how to apply mindfulness and awareness to cut them off, and when one attains equanimity, which naturally enters without the inequality of sinking and excitement, how to release effort, etc., should be understood as explained earlier in the chapter on calm abiding. In the instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom, it says: For the object to be meditated upon, first cultivate calm abiding and generate pliancy, and then again perform analytical meditation of insight on it and accomplish pliancy. When these are accomplished separately, they are said to be combined. In this way, it does not seem necessary to do both analysis and settling at the same time, so it is thought that it is permissible to do them separately in different sessions. What is important here is: By refuting how one's own ignorance imputes clinging, one should generate strong certainty on the emptiness of self-nature, which is the opposite of that, and then meditate on emptiness. If one does not refute the clinging of self-grasping and ignorance, and meditates on emptiness as something separate, then it will not harm the two self-graspings at all. This is like sending a ransom to the west to harm a demon that appears in the east. The former ones have said this again and again.
