It should be established in this way. Even if the other characteristics do not arise, if one meditates on the meaning of the non-erroneous view as previously explained, then that is meditating on the meaning of selflessness. If it is not meditating on the meaning of the view that has been definitively established without error, even if those four characteristics arise, it cannot be established as meditating on the definitive meaning. Therefore, whether or not one is meditating on the meaning of what is, is as previously explained. After meditating on that, the way to grow like an illusion should also be known as previously explained. Third, the way to unite quiescence and insight is: as explained in the context of the measure of the accomplishment of those two. If quiescence and insight are not attained, there will be no union, so for union, it is necessary to attain those two. Moreover, this will also attain union from the very beginning of attaining insight, so the way of that is: when one does analytical meditation relying on the previous quiescence, it is said that this also arises through the sequence of the four mental engagements such as engaging with effort, so when the fourth mental engagement arises as previously explained, it will become union. That is to say, at the end of analytical meditation, when one does abiding meditation and protects it, it is when it becomes an abiding meditation like the attainment of quiescence. In this way, it is also said in the Śrāvakabhūmi: 'How much does it take for quiescence and insight to be mixed and equally united, and what is called the path of union?' He said: 'From the nine modes of abiding of the mind, like this, having attained the ninth mode of equal abiding, and relying on the samādhi that is completely accomplished, one strives to distinguish the Dharma with superior wisdom. At that time, the path of distinguishing the Dharma will enter spontaneously and effortlessly, just like the path of quiescence, because there is no manifest activity, so insight is completely purified and completely subdued, and follows quiescence, and is completely seized with ease. Therefore, the quiescence and insight of that time are mixed and enter equally, and are called the path of quiescence and insight united.' Moreover, it is also said in the Bhāvanākrama III: 'If, when one enters equally because of being separated from sinking and agitation, and enters spontaneously, then'

When the mind of that person becomes extremely clear, one should relax the effort and remain in equanimity. At that time, one should realize that the path of uniting calm abiding and insight has been accomplished. So it is said. Then, why is such a state called union? Because before attaining such a state, one cannot bring forth the state of non-discrimination by the power of analytical meditation with individual discriminating thoughts. Therefore, analytical meditation and stabilizing meditation need to be practiced separately with individual effort. However, after attaining these two, one can bring forth calm abiding merely by engaging in analytical meditation with individual discriminating thoughts, hence it is called union. Here, investigation is insight, and the ultimate abiding of investigation is special calm abiding, which focuses on emptiness. Also, in the instructions of the Perfection of Wisdom, it says: 'Thereafter, focusing on the image with conceptualization, when the mind continuously and uninterruptedly experiences both with a stream of attention, it is called the path of uniting calm abiding and insight. There, calm abiding and insight are the pair, and union is possession, that is, entering by binding each other.' So it is said. Uninterrupted means that one does not need to stop the analytical meditation and abide in non-conceptualization, but rather the analytical meditation itself brings forth non-conceptualization. Experiencing both means experiencing both calm abiding, which focuses on the image of non-conceptualization, and insight, which focuses on the image with conceptualization. However, this is not at the same time, but rather experiencing it with the uninterrupted stream of the very attention of meditation. Then, if one thinks that it contradicts the previous statement that calm abiding is achieved first, and then the state is achieved through analytical meditation with individual discriminating thoughts, then, this refers to the fact that before calm abiding is achieved, calm abiding cannot be achieved unless one repeatedly alternates between investigation and ultimate abiding. And after obtaining calm abiding, it shows the difference in achieving calm abiding by meditating in that way, so there is no contradiction. Furthermore, before insight is achieved, there is a time when the immediately preceding analytical meditation can bring forth one-pointedness, so one should also consider this. Before insight is achieved, if one does not repeatedly alternate between investigation and ultimate abiding,
