Therefore, both are needed. That is, after engaging in the analytical meditation of vipassanā (insight), one engages in the settling meditation on that meaning, thereby accomplishing the union of śamatha and vipassanā with no-self as the object. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, the noble Jewel Cloud also stated: "Like this, one who is skilled in faults, in order to be separated from all elaborations, should engage in yoga in the meditation on emptiness. Because of meditating on emptiness a lot, wherever the mind wanders, if one completely seeks the nature of those places where the mind feels very happy, one will realize that they are empty. Whichever mind it is, if one seeks it, one will also realize that it is empty. Whichever mind realizes it, if one also completely seeks its nature, one will realize that it is empty. By realizing like this, one enters into signless yoga." This shows that sending forth complete investigation is what leads to entering into signlessness. It is very clearly shown that merely completely abandoning mental activity, without examining the nature of things with wisdom, is impossible to enter into non-conceptualization. Thus it is said. That scripture says that if one examines the object of the wandering mind and the mind that wanders, one will realize that they are empty, and that realizing emptiness, if one also seeks or examines, one will realize that it is empty, and it also says that those are also done at the time of meditating on emptiness. It also says that by examining and realizing emptiness, one enters into signless yoga. Therefore, without first sending forth the rational investigation of seeking through complete investigation, as the Heshang wishes, merely abandoning the mental activity of gathering the wandering mind, it is clearly shown that it is impossible to enter into signlessness or non-conceptualization. Therefore, as previously explained, with the sword of reason, cut off the nature of the two selves that are not established even to the slightest extent in all phenomena, thereby establishing certainty in no-self. Like this, if the things of the two selves do not exist, then what is there that is truly established as the non-existence of that which is negated? Just as holding that the non-existence of a barren woman's son exists depends on the two objects of a barren woman and a son, and if those two are never taken as objects, then no one would establish that the non-existence of a barren woman's son truly exists. If any truly existing thing is not taken as an object on any ādhāra (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思:基础), then the discrimination of holding that the non-existence of that thing truly exists

Nowhere will it arise. Therefore, all conceptualizations that cling to characteristics will cease, because if it is a conceptualization of clinging to truth, then it is any conceptualization that clings to things or non-things as true. Because it is said in the Stages of Meditation that if the pervader ceases, then the pervaded object will also cease. Therefore, whether things exist or not, it is certain that there is not even a particle of truth established, and generating a deep conviction and alternately placing the meaning determined by this conviction into practice is the accomplishment of non-conceptual wisdom. It is not possible to accomplish it merely by withdrawing attention without examining the object, because it is not possible to abandon the clinging to truth. Because that is merely not thinking that it exists truly, but it is not realizing the absence of truth. Similarly, that is merely not thinking that the self exists, but it is not realizing the absence of self, therefore, meditating on it does not harm the clinging to self at all. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between not thinking that it exists truly and that it exists as two, and realizing the absence of truth and the absence of self. Be sure to grasp this as the key point! Second, refuting the argument: If individually examining the meaning of selflessness is conceptualization, then it is contradictory for non-conceptual wisdom to arise from it, because the result and the cause must be consistent. If someone thinks like this, then in response to this, the Blessed One himself explained it with an example. In the chapter of Light Protector, it says: "Light Protector, for example, just as two pieces of wood are rubbed together by the wind and fire arises from them, and after arising, it burns the two pieces of wood, so too, Light Protector, if there is correct individual contemplation, then the king of noble wisdom will arise, and when it arises, it will burn that very correct individual contemplation." Thus, it is said in the sutra that noble wisdom arises from individual contemplation. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, it also says: "Therefore, one should analyze in this way with wisdom. When the yogi does not apprehend the intrinsic nature of any phenomenon as ultimately real, at that time he enters into non-conceptual samadhi. He also realizes the intrinsic non-existence of all phenomena. If someone does not meditate by individually examining the intrinsic nature of phenomena with wisdom, but only meditates by completely abandoning mental activity
