One should meditate on emptiness by remembering the meaning of emptiness. Merely engaging in a state of non-conceptual stillness, without any thought, does not constitute meditating on emptiness. Here, according to my own tradition, the term 'non-conceptual,' which frequently appears in the context of quiescence (shamatha) and these occasions, refers to abiding by holding onto an object of focus without engaging in extensive deliberation of 'this is this, this is not this.' It does not imply aiming for a state devoid of thought. The third refutation of other systems is: Some say that they do not accept that placing oneself in a non-conceptual state without having found the view is the beginning of meditating on emptiness, nor do they accept that whatever is placed in a non-conceptual state after finding the view is meditating on emptiness. However, they say that if one alternates with cultivating a state of non-conceptuality, and prior to that, one engages in a single instance of analysis with the wisdom of individual discrimination, then whatever non-conceptual state one places oneself in thereafter will become meditating on the meaning of emptiness. This is also unreasonable. If that were the case, then engaging in a single instance of analyzing the view before falling asleep, and then falling into a deep sleep of non-conceptuality thereafter, would also become meditating on emptiness, which would be an extreme consequence. This is because both are similar in that the analysis of the view precedes them, and it seems that it is not necessary for the meditation to be placed upon the view during its own time. Therefore, even if one engages in the analysis of the view and abides in the meaning of having ascertained the absence of inherent existence, if after a while the placement on the view is lost and one simply abides in a state of non-conceptuality in general, this is not a meditation on emptiness. Therefore, one must sharpen one's conceptual awareness and carefully monitor whether one is abiding on the view, and cultivate in that way. The fourth refutation of other systems is: Some say that they do not accept the previous three positions. Rather, when meditating on emptiness, one should first generate certainty about emptiness, and then hold the mind on that meaning without engaging in other speculations. This is meditating on emptiness without perversion, because it does not lack the mind turning towards emptiness like the first position, nor does it lack remembering the view of emptiness when cultivating non-conceptuality like the second position, nor does it lack the non-conceptual state not abiding on the view even though the analysis of the view precedes it like the third position. This is what they think. This so-called 'engaging in the analysis of the view' actually means merely remembering the view and then only doing the meditation of placing oneself on the view.

Therefore, if someone wants to meditate on emptiness, it is unreasonable. Because if that were the case, that person would only have the shamatha of meditating on emptiness, but would not have the method of cultivating vipassana through analytical meditation, because there is no cultivation of shamatha-vipassana combined, so it is one-sided. Secondly, according to my own view, if the view of the true meaning of selflessness is not found, then all the meditations in his continuum will not be directed towards selflessness. Therefore, a view of selflessness must be found. From paper to. Furthermore, it is not enough to just understand, when practicing, one must remember the view and observe, and one must meditate on the meaning of what is observed. For this, both the shamatha that does not observe the meaning of selflessness and the meditation after observing with individual self-awareness wisdom are necessary. It is not enough to have only one aspect. There are three points here: the reason why both shamatha and vipassana are needed, refuting the debate on this, and briefly explaining the key points of the practice method. The first point is: if there is no definite view on the meaning of selflessness, the realization of vipassana will not arise, because this is the cause of vipassana. Furthermore, not hearing the words explaining this view is also considered an obstacle to vipassana. The Samdhinirmocana Sutra says: "Lord, from what causes and conditions do shamatha and vipassana arise?" Maitreya Bodhisattva said: "They arise from the cause of pure morality, and from the cause of pure view arising from hearing and thinking." It also says: "Not hearing the words of the noble ones as desired is an obstacle to vipassana." In the Vimalakirti Sutra, as asked by the son of non-greed: "Wisdom arises from hearing, and with wisdom one eliminates afflictions," etc., as stated as quoted earlier. The way vipassana arises from that view is: first, when determining, analyze and determine from various angles of scripture and reasoning. After determining, do not repeatedly observe and practice with individual self-awareness wisdom, merely doing shamatha will not produce it. Therefore, when meditating after achieving shamatha, one must observe and practice. To this, some say: Although it is not desired not to observe from the beginning, after having determined through hearing and thinking, when meditating, if one does analytical meditation, then the conceptual thoughts are all grasping at characteristics.
