Whatever there is, if all binds to samsara, then aren't you seeking liberation from samsara? If you seek that, then giving and keeping vows, etc., must also be done with conceptual thought. What is the need for doing those things? It has been said much before. Therefore, if you think that all conceptual thought binds to samsara, then the view of Heshang is good. If it's like you, then you will be crushed by the burden of contradiction. Also, some who follow him think like this: After much speculation on the objects of grasping at the marks of self and other, then reversing the grasping of the object is like a dog chasing a stone, it is an external cessation of elaboration. From the beginning, holding the mind without scattering to anything, like holding the hand that throws the stone, by doing that itself, not scattering to those objects of grasping at marks is cutting off all elaboration from within. Therefore, studying the scriptures and reasoning that establish the view is just indulging in the words of terminology. This is the extreme of wrong thought that abandons all the scriptures of the Buddha and the treatises of the wise, such as the Six Ornaments, because they only establish the meaning with reasoning and scripture. Furthermore, one should carefully examine how the mind that grasps at the marks of self and other grasps, and then through pure scripture and reasoning, by drawing certainty that what it grasps is non-existent, one needs to collapse the false root of error. If such certainty is not found, merely holding the mind, even if at that time the mind does not scatter to the objects of self and other, one cannot realize selflessness merely by that. If it is not like that, then at the time of deep sleep and fainting, etc., the mind does not scatter to them either, then they also realize selflessness, which would be too extreme. This is like, for example, at night, being afraid in an unfamiliar cave, wondering whether there is a demon or not, instead of lifting a lamp to investigate well whether there is a demon there or not, and thereby dispelling the fear, but saying, 'Don't let the conceptual thought of the demon scatter, hold the mind.' In the final stage of meditation, it says: 'When fighting a battle, open your eyes...'

Carefully observe where the enemy is. Don't act like a warrior brandishing a sword there, but rather like a coward who closes his eyes and hides when he sees a powerful enemy. As it is said in the *Sutra of the Manifestation of Manjushri*: 'Daughter, how does a Bodhisattva conquer on the battlefield?' The reply is: 'Manjushri, if thoroughly examined, what is it that all phenomena are unobtainable?' Therefore, the yogi should open the eye of wisdom and defeat the enemy of afflictions with the sword of wisdom, abiding in fearlessness, and not close his eyes like a coward.' Thus it is said. Therefore, just as when one mistakes a rope for a snake and becomes frightened, one generates the certainty that the coiled thing is a rope and not a snake, thereby eliminating the suffering of illusion and fear, so too, the illusion of clinging to the existence of a dualistic self, and the suffering of samsara that arises from that illusion, must be eliminated by drawing on the certainty of scripture and reasoning to determine that the object of self-grasping does not exist, thereby understanding that self-grasping is an illusion, and then eliminating it by becoming accustomed to that truth. If self-grasping disappears, then all the suffering of samsara that arises from it will also disappear. Therefore, the reason for analyzing objects in Madhyamaka treatises and the like in order to eliminate them is as follows. Aryadeva said: 'If one sees the absence of self in objects, then the seed of existence is cut off.' The *Entering the Middle Way* also says: 'If there were real things, then discriminations would arise, but how real things do not exist has already been thoroughly examined.' This means that since discriminations that cling to reality produce real things, one must analyze in many ways that the objects of these discriminations do not exist. And it says: 'The yogi generates discriminations with the self as the object, thereby eliminating the self.' The Lord of Reasoning also said: 'If this object is not refuted, then it cannot be abandoned.' 'Abandoning desire and hatred, etc., which are related to virtues and faults, is not because their objects are not seen, but because of external forms.' Many similar things have been said. Since any discrimination is a bond to samsara, when practicing emptiness, someone says to eliminate all discriminations. This should also be analyzed as follows: Does an ordinary person
