Thinking thus. If one does not cultivate in this way, then any conceptualization is grasping at characteristics, and it is unreasonable to prevent many ordinary beings from wanting to meditate on selflessness with wisdom free from conceptualization. Furthermore, if all those conceptualizations are grasping at truth, and therefore are prevented during meditation, then during determination, those things must also be done through conceptualization, and therefore must also be prevented. Explaining to students, debating, writing, and observing, etc., all of these must also be done by you through conceptualization, and therefore must also be prevented at that time, because grasping at truth must be prevented during meditation, but there is not even a slight difference in that it is not needed at other times. If one does not think that way, but rather thinks that examining through scripture and reasoning from many aspects is for the sake of causing those who have not understood the meaning of selflessness to understand, and also that the view has already been found, so it is not needed during meditation, then in that case, since one has manifestly realized selflessness on the path of seeing, from then on meditating on that selflessness that has already been seen becomes meaningless. If one says that it is necessary to meditate on that, because what is to be abandoned by meditation is abandoned through habituation, but it is not abandoned by merely seeing, then it is the same. Here too, although one has already ascertained through hearing and thinking in the past, it is still necessary to become accustomed to determining, because the more one becomes accustomed to determining, the more that ascertainment becomes stronger, longer lasting, clearer in appearance, and more stable, etc., as is seen. Therefore, as it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Ascertainment and the mind of imputation, are by nature the object to be harmed and the agent of harm." As it is said, those two are the object to be harmed and the agent of harm, so the more stable and stronger, etc., the ascertainment becomes, the more it harms imputation. Here too, the ascertainment of no self-nature must be made increasingly stable, and that must be thought about through the doors of many agents of harm and proofs. If it is not like that, then for impermanence, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, the mind of enlightenment, loving-kindness, and compassion, etc., one would also have to cultivate by grasping only one way of grasping, such as "I will die," without examining after having gained those understandings, because all the reasons are the same. Therefore, in order to lead to pure ascertainment, one needs the thought "I will die," and...

It is not enough to just make vows, such as thinking, "I will attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings," and merely generating compassion for sentient beings. Just as it is necessary to contemplate from various reasons, it is also not enough to merely make vows regarding firm conviction and strong intention of selflessness. It is necessary to contemplate from various aspects of harm and establishment, as has already been extensively explained in the context of the Lesser Person. Even so, all three stages of the Stages of Meditation state that when meditating after achieving Shamatha, one should meditate after much investigation. The Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds also states, "The yogi should prevent the self," and so forth, indicating that these investigations should be done during meditation. This is because a yogi is someone who has attained either Shamatha or Vipassana. Moreover, it is not that one does not seek understanding of views before achieving Shamatha. In the section on wisdom after Samadhi, the investigations of views are explained, so according to the key of that sequence, one should first accomplish Samadhi and then contemplate the two selflessnesses. The Essence of the Middle Way also states, "The wise, after equipoise, should examine with wisdom in this way these phenomena, objects to be grasped through conventional means." The commentary states that after the arising of Samadhi, one should engage in the investigation of views. The Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds also states that after accomplishing Shamatha as described in the chapter on Shamatha, one should then meditate on wisdom with rational investigation. Therefore, the sequence of the last two Paramitas and the sequence of the last two trainings are all sequences of first accomplishing Samadhi and then meditating on wisdom. And all the statements about how to meditate on that wisdom, with investigation into how it is and how much it is, are the sequence of meditation, and should not be misinterpreted. Not only that, but many great treatises state this, so there is no doubt that one should investigate during meditation. Thus, if one only engages in analytical meditation when meditating on Vipassana after achieving Shamatha, the previous Shamatha will be destroyed, and since it has not been newly cultivated, Shamatha will be lost. Therefore, Vipassana will also not arise, as explained before. Therefore, one must both maintain the Shamatha that has already been established and engage in analytical meditation.
