The elaboration spoken in language will arise. If one does not fixate on a maiden, then those with attachment will not engage in elaboration with her as the object. If elaboration does not arise, then incorrect conceptualization of her object will not arise. If conceptualization does not arise, then from the manifest clinging to "I" and "mine," the aggregates of afflictions with the root of the view of the perishable aggregate will not be generated. If the aggregates of afflictions with the root of the view of the perishable aggregate are not generated, then actions will not be done. Those who do not perform actions will also not experience the cycle of birth, aging, and death. Thus it is said. The way in which those are reversed by realizing emptiness is also from that very source: Because in that way, emptiness, relying on the characteristic of the complete pacification of all elaboration, becomes free from elaboration. And by being free from elaboration, conceptualization also ceases. When conceptualization ceases, afflictions cease. When actions and afflictions cease, birth ceases. Therefore, emptiness alone is the characteristic of reversing all elaboration. Therefore, it is called Nirvana. Thus it is very clearly stated that this shows that the view of emptiness is the cutter of the root of existence, and like the lifeblood of the path of liberation, it is shown by valid proof. Therefore, it is necessary to gain firm conviction in this. Thus, those treatises of the noble teacher clearly state that even Hearers and Solitary Realizers have the realization that all phenomena are without inherent existence, because it is said that liberation from cyclic existence is accomplished by the view of emptiness, which is without inherent existence. This view is also cultivated by Hearers and Solitary Realizers until their own afflictions are exhausted, and when afflictions are exhausted, they consider it sufficient, so they do not cultivate for a long time, so they are not able to abandon the obscuration of knowledge. Bodhisattvas do not consider it sufficient to be liberated from cyclic existence merely by exhausting afflictions, but because they seek Buddhahood for the sake of all sentient beings, they cultivate to exhaust the obscuration of knowledge, adorned with a very long time and infinite accumulations. Thus, the antidote that uproots the seeds of both obscurations is the view of emptiness previously explained.

However, through prolonged meditation or non-meditation, one can only remove the obscuration of afflictions, but not the obscuration of knowledge. For example, although the realization of selflessness itself is the antidote to both the obscurations to be abandoned by seeing and the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation, merely directly seeing selflessness can only remove the obscurations to be abandoned by seeing, but cannot remove the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation. Therefore, to remove the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation, one needs prolonged meditation, just like that. Even so, to remove the obscuration of knowledge, merely meditating for a long time is not enough to remove it; one also needs to rely on many other vast practices. There is no meditation as an antidote to the obscuration of knowledge, and merely meditating as a method to remove the obscuration of afflictions. Therefore, it is said that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not meditate on the complete realization of the selflessness of phenomena. The Commentary on Entering the Middle Way says: "Even Hearers and Solitary Buddhas only see this cause of dependent arising, but even so, they do not meditate on the complete selflessness of phenomena, because they have a method to remove the afflictions that operate in the three realms." Thus, what other Madhyamikas consider to be the clinging to phenomena, this teacher considers to be afflictive ignorance, and although there is meditation on the selflessness of phenomena that completely removes it, there is no complete meditation on the selflessness of phenomena. Understand these as explained earlier and here. So, according to this one's view, what is the obscuration of knowledge? The obscuration of knowledge is the dualistic confusion that, from beginningless time, through the gateway of manifest clinging to things that are clung to as inherently existent, leaves a firm imprint on the mind-stream due to the power of habit, and due to the power of habit, although there is no inherent existence, it appears as inherently existent. The Commentary on Entering the Middle Way says: "Moreover, Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have abandoned afflictive ignorance, regard accumulations, images, and so on, as if they exist. This is merely a fabricated nature, not true, because they do not manifest clinging to it as true. For children, it is deceptive, but for others, it is entirely dependent arising, like illusions and so on."
