That which arises is not independent, because it arises dependent on causes and conditions. All of this is without independence. Therefore, nothing has self-nature, that is, no own being. Thus it is said. Independence means that when it appears to be established by its own nature, those cognitions appear to be independent of others, and it is also the meaning of being established as it appears. However, if one considers not relying on other causes and conditions and negates that, then there is no need to establish it for one's own school, and even if it is negated, it cannot be established as having attained the view of Madhyamaka. Therefore, the way of abiding in which one can independently exist on the object by way of its own nature should be considered independent. Therefore, the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence is to be separated from that independent own being, and not to be without functional entities. Because the reason of being interdependent can negate inherent existence. From the end of the previous quote: Therefore, here, dependent arising is separated from the independent own being. The meaning of being separated from the independent own being is the meaning of emptiness, but it is not the meaning that all things do not exist. Thus it is said. Therefore, to view that there are no functional entities is a slander against the pure dependent arising like illusion, and it is inverted. To view that there are inherently existent entities is also inverted, because there is no such inherent existence in anything. Likewise, from the end of the immediately following quote: Therefore, for the dependent arising here, having made a slander of the cause of all defilement and purification like illusion, to view it as non-existent is inverted, and because there is no inherent existence, to view entities as existent is also inverted. Therefore, if that is the case, then for those who say that entities have inherent existence, there will be the fault of the absence of dependent arising and falling into the views of permanence and annihilation. Thus it is said. Therefore, wanting to be separated from the views of permanence and annihilation, one should accept the absence of inherent existence and the pure dependent arising like illusion. If the independent own being is negated by the functional dependent arising, and the meaning of being separated from independence is the meaning of dependent arising, then what have you negated for us?

Moreover, because you also accept that things have a function. If you think there is no difference between you and us, it is because, even though you accept dependent origination and causality, just as a young child takes the face in the mirror as a real face, you also cling to dependent origination as being established by its own nature, and say that it is the self-nature of things. Therefore, you do not understand dependent origination as it is, nor do you speak of dependent origination as it is. But I consider it to be without self-nature, and say so, and that is the difference. Similarly, at the end of that very passage, it also says: If the meaning of being without autonomy is the meaning of dependent origination, then, you think that I am causing harm to you, what difference is there between you and us? It should be said that you understand the meaning of dependent origination as it is, and cannot express it, and that is the difference. Just as a young child is not familiar with terms, so he clings more to the image in the mirror, thinking that it is truly established, thereby excluding the self-nature emptiness that exists as it is, and thinking that it has self-nature, so he does not understand the image. You are also like that, even if you accept dependent origination, but the dependent origination that is similar to an image, even though it has become emptiness of self-nature, you do not understand how its self-nature exists. Because you do not take non-self-nature as non-self-nature, but instead cling more to the non-existent self-nature, thinking that it exists. Nor can you express dependent origination, because you do not say that it is without self-nature, but instead say that it is the self-nature of things. Although it is similar in accepting causal dependent origination, it shows the difference between understanding or not understanding dependent origination, and being able to speak or not being able to speak, through saying non-self-nature and self-nature. This shows that if you admit that things have a function, then those who speak of things will say that it is truly established, so arguing about whether it truly exists or not is just arguing about names. Similarly, if you admit that things have a function in the conventional world, then in the conventional world, the self
