Singing, dancing, and even weeping, likewise, echoes arise dependent on them, but there is never melody in sound. Know all phenomena to be like that. Just as in a dream one relies on desires, but upon awakening, one does not see them. Children are deeply attached to and infatuated with desires. Know all phenomena to be like that. Magicians conjure up forms, creating horses, elephants, chariots, and various things, but in reality, there is nothing there. Know all phenomena to be like that. Just as in a young woman's dream, she sees a son born and then die, rejoicing at his birth and grieving at his death. Know all phenomena to be like that. Just as the moon in the water at night appears in clear and unpolluted water, the moon in the water is empty, impossible to gather or hold. Know all phenomena to be like that. Just as at midday in summer, a person tormented by thirst sees a mirage as a mass of water. Know all phenomena to be like that. In a mirage, there is neither water nor non-water, yet foolish beings desire to drink from it, unable to drink the unreal water. Know all phenomena to be like that. Just as when one cuts down a moist tree, desiring its essence, one finds no essence either inside or outside. Know all phenomena to be like that. Thus it is said. Secondly, applying the way of accomplishment through the distinction of names to the meaning: Just as relying on spokes and so forth, it is named a chariot, those parts are to be taken up. The chariot is the taker, similarly, relying on the five aggregates, six elements, and six sense sources, it is clung to as self, those are to be taken up, and the self is the taker, just as the chariot and its parts are the agent and the object of action. The self performs the action of taking the aggregates, etc., therefore it is the agent, and the aggregates, etc., are the object to be taken by it, therefore it is the object. As it is said in the Entering Path: Likewise, the world commonly calls relying on the aggregates, elements, and six sense sources, I am also considered the taker, taking the aggregates is action, and I am the agent.

Thus it is said. This also, like a chariot, if one examines it in the ultimate truth, then among the seven aspects, that self cannot be found anywhere. Therefore, there is not even a little bit of self-nature, but without examination, it exists in the conventional truth. Secondly, it also shows that what belongs to the self is also refuted, saying that if one searches for the existence or non-existence of the self in this way, seeking with reason, then among the seven aspects, nothing is found anywhere. When the self-nature of the self is refuted, how can one find with reason that this is the eye, etc., of the self? In this way, what belongs to the self also has no self-nature, because when a yogi does not perceive any self-nature of the self and what belongs to the self, he will be liberated from samsara, and this will be explained later. The eighteenth chapter of the Entering the Middle Way says: "If the self itself does not exist, how can what belongs to the self exist?" Also, the Entering the Path says: "Because there is no agent, there is no arising from the agent, therefore what belongs to the self does not exist because there is no self. Therefore, by contemplating the emptiness of the self and what belongs to the self, the yogi will be liberated." Thus it is said. By the power of realizing that the self has no self-nature, one will also realize that what belongs to the self also has no self-nature, with the accompanying resolution of doubts, which should be understood from what has been said before. Thirdly, the way to apply those reasons to others is that just as the examination of the self and the aggregates is the same as the examination of the chariot, so also the pot and the woolen cloth, etc., should be understood, saying that the pot, etc., and their own form, etc., are examined with one or different, etc., and when searching for the existence or non-existence of self-nature with reason, when searching in the seven aspects, among them, nothing can be found in either of the two truths, but it is established in the nominal consciousness that has not been examined, as the Holy Three Vows Sutra says: "The world argues with me, but I do not argue with the world. Whatever the world considers to exist or not exist, I also consider it to be so." Thus it is said, therefore, it has been promised not to prevent the world's acceptance with reason. Thus, as it is also said in the Entering the Middle Way: "Pots, clothes, tents, armies, forests, rows of trees, houses, chariots, small things, guest houses, and all things, as well as those that arise from the door, what he said, should be understood, because the Thubwang does not argue with the world."
