Among the two types of appearances that appear as forms and so on, like illusions, here we are referring to the latter. That is, the latter also has the meaning of the former's illusion, but the former does not necessarily have the meaning of the latter's illusion. The way the latter is established is based on the two minds of grasping appearance and determining emptiness. For example, the appearance of illusory horses and cows is seen by the eye consciousness, and based on the mind's determination that there are no horses and cows as they appear, the appearance of horses and cows is determined to be an illusion or a false appearance. Similarly, when a person and so on appear undeniably to the conventional consciousness, and it is determined by reason that they are empty of inherent existence, then the person is determined to be an illusion or a false appearance. Here, reason cannot establish that appearance exists, and conventional validity cannot establish that it is empty of inherent existence. Therefore, the reason why we need both the wisdom of reason that seeks whether inherent existence exists or not and the conventional mind that grasps forms and so on as existing is this. Therefore, if you do not want forms and so on to appear like illusions, since the conventional mind that grasps them is naturally present, you do not need to strive to generate it. Instead, you should examine them extensively with the reasoning that examines whether inherent existence exists or not, and then generate a strong conviction that inherent existence is refuted. Then, when you look at the arising of appearances, they will appear like illusions.

Then you will be able to understand well the ways in which emptiness arises. In this regard, too, as previously explained, if the measure of what is to be refuted is not well grasped, and one examines one and different, etc., with reason, then when one sees harm to them, if one thinks that persons, etc., do not exist at all, or if one thinks that things such as persons, etc., are like rabbit horns, etc., empty of all function, then that is a great nihilistic view, and one should know that it is a deviation from the correct view. If that is the case, what will happen? As it says in the commentary on the Four Hundred: "Seeing dependent arising as it is, it becomes like a magic trick, but not like the son of a barren woman." If this analysis completely refutes birth in all ways, and one wants to show that there is no conditioned birth, then at that time it will not become like a magic trick, but it will be close to the son of a barren woman, etc. Because of the fear that dependent arising will be overturned, one will not conform to them, but one will conform to magic tricks, etc., which do not contradict it. Because it is said that way. Therefore, if one grasps the meaning of mere illusion with the intellect that seeks the existence or non-existence of inherent existence, it is a fault. However, if one analyzes with that intellect, and in the ruins where inherent existence has been refuted, one grasps that things have only the meaning of illusion, then that is necessarily born, so it is not a fault. Because the commentary on the Four Hundred says: "Therefore, after analyzing in that way, the inherent existence of things will not be established, so from each aspect, only something like illusion will remain for things." Because it is said that the meaning of illusion must remain. This is also the case when the inherent existence of that sprout, which is established by its own nature, is refuted, as long as the activity of that intellect has not disappeared, then during that time, by examining what is reasonable and unreasonable with reason, the thought of grasping that the sprout has inherent existence will not arise. However, if one thinks that the sprout's lack of inherent existence is true, or if one thinks that the appearance of emptiness of inherent existence is true like an illusion, then that is a faulty grasping that needs to be refuted by reason. If there are none of those, grasping the meaning of something like an illusion will also have the fault of grasping at illusion.
