Although the gray footprints can be discerned, it is absolutely impossible for its feet to step on them. It is said that it should be sought from the 'Entering the Path of Enlightenment.' Now, let's explain the usual meaning: If one thinks that 'I' and the aggregates are one, then in the twenty-seventh chapter, it says, 'How is it taken closely? It becomes the taker.' This (statement) is a great hindrance. Because people will say, 'This person took this body,' so the aggregates are what should be taken closely, and 'I' am the taker. If one thinks that these two are one, then the action of the deed and the doer will become one. Therefore, the cutter and the cut object, the pot and the potter, the fire and the firewood, etc., will also become one. The tenth chapter also says, 'If the firewood is fire, the doer and the deed become one. Fire and wood, as well as the order of I and close taking, together with pots, felt, etc., have all been explained in detail.' The 'Entering the Path of Enlightenment' also says, 'The taker and the self-close taking are not one kind of real thing. If so, then the actor becomes one self.' Therefore, if 'I' and the aggregates are one, then admitting 'I' is meaningless, and 'I' will become many, action and the doer will become one, the deeds done will be wasted, one will encounter deeds not done, and the words of remembering past lives are unreasonable. These six faults mean that it should not be admitted as one. Second, refuting the different view: If 'I' and the aggregates are not one in nature, but it is thought that they are different in nature, then what fault would there be? To this, the eighteenth chapter says, 'If different from the aggregates, then there will be no characteristics of the aggregates.' Thus, the fault is spoken. If 'I' is a different existence established in essence from the aggregates, then it will not have the characteristics of the aggregates, that is, arising, ceasing, and abiding. For example, a horse and a cow are different in essence, so they do not have the characteristics of a cow. If one thinks so, then it is not the basis for establishing 'I,' nor is it the object of grasping as 'I,' because it is uncreated. For example, flowers in the sky or Nirvana. One should thus carry out the arguments of other schools, as stated in the 'Clear Words.' I have the characteristics of arising and ceasing.

If it is not possessed, it will become permanent. At that time, there will be nothing to do with the unchanging permanence, so the assertion of self will become meaningless, because any entry or exit is impossible. This is what the teacher Sangye Kyang said. Furthermore, if the characteristics of the aggregates, such as being able to be regarded as form, are different in nature, then they must be perceived as such, just as form and mind are perceived as different. Because there is no such grasping, there is no other self, as it is said in the twenty-seventh chapter of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The self is not established other than the aggregates of close grasping. If it is elsewhere, there is no grasping, then it is impossible to have something to be grasped." And in the Madhyamakavatara it is also said: "Therefore, there is no self other than the aggregates, because without the aggregates, grasping it is not established." Therefore, the non-Buddhists assert a self that is different from the aggregates because they do not understand that the self is just a name, and they also see that being one with the aggregates is unreasonable, so they assert it under the influence of their tenets. Those people do not think so because of their conventional consciousness in their continuum. One should cultivate the firm conviction of seeing the harm to the self existing differently from the aggregates by its own nature through these reasons. If one does not obtain a clear understanding of the harm to these two aspects of oneness and otherness, then even if one determines that a person is without self-nature, it will only become a verbal commitment, and therefore one will not be able to obtain a pure view. Therefore, if one wants to investigate whether a person truly exists, if the person truly exists, then one must investigate the aggregates as one or different. If one thinks they are one, then the ultimate harm is like fire and firewood, the agent and the action become one, and so on. If one thinks they are one, then one must negate it with the direct perception of the world, and the tenets that are not commonly accepted by both the proponent and the opponent will not become harm. Similarly, for the existence of otherness, if it exists in that way, it should be seen separately like form and mind, but because it is not seen in that way, this is the harm of not grasping through self-satisfied knowledge. The tenets that are not commonly accepted will not become harm. Therefore, in the context of examining reality, all harms
