same. This is also stated in the Root Wisdom, in the twenty-seventh chapter: "Apart from the near-taking, if it is said that there is a self, the near-taking itself is the self, then your self does not exist." The second is, if the self and the aggregates are established as the same nature, then just as one person has many aggregates, there will also be many selves. If there is only one self, then there is the fault that the aggregates will also become one. As it is also said in the Entering the Middle Way: "If the aggregates are the self, then because of the many, those selves also become many." The third is, in the eighteenth chapter it is said: "If the aggregates are the self, then there will be birth and destruction." And, in the twenty-seventh chapter it is said: "The near-taking is not the self, it is arising and ceasing." Here, near-taking should be understood as the aggregates. If like this, it is thought that the self is momentary arising and ceasing, then what fault is there? To this, the root and commentary of the Entering the Middle Way state three faults: it is unreasonable to remember birth, the actions done will be wasted, and there will be the fault of encountering actions not done. The first is, if the self is momentary arising and ceasing, then the self is arising and ceasing established by its own nature, so the former and later selves will become separate by their own characteristics. In that case, it will not be said, "At that time, at that time, I was the king, I was the child." Because the self of the child and the self of the teacher are separate established by their own characteristics. For example, just as Devadatta does not remember thinking "I was a sacrificer" when remembering his birth. If it is not like that, even if it is established as separate by its own nature, if the later one does not contradict remembering the things experienced before, then if Devadatta's experiences cannot be remembered by the sacrificer, it is necessary to explain the different reasons, but that cannot be found either. This is like the earth sprout and the seedling sprout, which are also considered to be the nature established by their own nature, and others also consider it to be cause and effect, if such cause and effect can be established, then darkness will also arise from the flame, which is the same as the reasoning that prevents other births. It is not possible to reconcile it in that way by merely thinking of it as separate. Then the teacher

I wonder if the "I, I Two Births Sutra" only explains one principle. This teaching is to refute other schools, not just to explain one principle. Therefore, the sutra says, "If at that time it is thought that so-and-so is another, do not look at it that way." This is what the teacher Chandrakirti thinks. Regarding the sutra that says this, some confused people say: The Buddha and the sentient beings of their previous lives are one, and the sutra says, "I was once this," thus saying that the two are one. Moreover, if it is a conditioned phenomenon, it will perish in an instant, so it cannot be one, therefore both are permanent. Saying this is the first of the four wrong views based on the past extreme. To prevent it, the holy Nagarjuna said in the twenty-seventh chapter: "To say that it happened in the past is unreasonable. Whatever happened in previous lives is not this." Saying this, if so, then one sentient being will also become a sentient being of the six realms, because they took bodies in the six realms in sequence, and those before and after are also permanent and one. Similarly, refutation is also said for those who think that those before and after are self-established and different from each other. That is, if I have self-nature, then those before and after will either become one with self-nature, and then they will become permanent. Or they will become different with self-nature, and then they will become nihilistic views, so wise people should not accept that I have self-nature. The fault of actions being fruitless is: If I arise and perish moment by moment, established by my own characteristics, if it is thought that the fruits of the karma created by the previous I are enjoyed by the later I, then it will be prevented below. Here, there will be no experience of the fruits of previously accumulated karma, because the I who created the karma has perished before experiencing the fruits, and there is no other I. That is, because the things before and after do not establish otherness with their own self-nature, there is no later I that is different in essence from the former, and if the former has not experienced the fruits, then there must be no experience of the fruits. The answer to being the same continuum will also be prevented below, so it is impossible to avoid the fruitlessness of actions. Unperformed actions
