If it can be found in any of those seven, then it cannot be found in any of them. Even if it is not found in that way, it seems impossible to deny the name of a chariot, therefore, what is called a "chariot" is only established by those whose eyes of wisdom have been dimmed by the obscuration of ignorance, and it is not established by its own nature, one should generate such a definite understanding. The yogi will easily enter into that suchness. The word "also" in "that also" indicates that the conventional will also not be destroyed. The way to definitively negate the inherent existence of a chariot is: to examine it in seven ways. This method is clear, and the reasoning for negation is also very clear. Therefore, relying on this, it is easy to realize that a chariot has no inherent existence. In short, based on the chariot, there are three benefits to making the kind of distinctions that were previously explained: it is easy to refute the extreme of permanence, which clings to inherent existence in phenomena; it is easy to refute the extreme of nihilism, which thinks that dependent arising is not possible without inherent existence; and the order in which a yogi closely examines how those two benefits are achieved through reasoning. First, if the way to negate inherent existence by merely negating one or many is too brief, it is difficult to understand, and if it is too extensive, it becomes tedious, so examining it in seven ways is very appropriate. Second, when negating at the beginning, one negates by adding a distinction to the object of negation. In this way, although inherent existence is negated, it does not harm the existence of functions in conventional terms. Third, if the pervader were inherently existent, then one would draw the certainty that the scope of the pervader would not go beyond the seven aspects of one or many, and then, when one points out the obstacles to each of those, and sees that harm befalls any of those seven, then, because the pervader is negated, one first negates the pervader, thereby drawing many decisive understandings of non-inherent existence. After that, when one sees that even though it is non-inherent in that way, the name of the chariot cannot be denied, then, alas! This illusion of a chariot and so on, made by the magician of karma and afflictions, is so amazing, that it arises from its own causes and conditions without deviating even slightly, and yet there is not even a little inherent existence established by its own entity.

Therefore, thinking, one can be certain that the meaning of dependent arising is unproduced by nature. The commentary on the Four Hundred also says: When vases and the like are examined in five ways, as the same as or different from their own cause, they do not exist. Even so, since they are established dependently, they are capable of holding honey, water, milk, and so on. Is this not amazing? It also says: Whatever is an object of focus that is without inherent existence is empty of inherent existence, like a wheel of fire. As it is said. Second, applying to the meaning, there are two: applying the way of non-inherent existence to the meaning, and applying the way of establishment to the meaning from the perspective of the difference of names. The first has four aspects: refuting the view that the self is one with the aggregates, refuting the view that the self is different from the aggregates, thereby refuting the remaining views, and the way in which a person appears like an illusion based on this. First, in general, when a phenomenon is completely determined by the mind to be with characteristics, it can eliminate what is without characteristics. Similarly, when it is completely determined to be without characteristics, it can also eliminate what is with characteristics, which is commonly seen in the world. Thus, in general, one can eliminate three categories for one and different, or one and many, because with characteristics and without characteristics are one and many. In general, if one determines one and not-one, then, in particular, one can also determine one and different that are established by their own nature. Thus, if the self or person also has an inherent existence that is established by its own nature, then it cannot transcend one and different. So, one should consider, is this self one with the aggregates, established by its own nature, or is it different, established by its own nature? To this, first, if the self and the aggregates are established as one in nature, what fault would there be? The yogi should look for what harms the view of oneness. To this, Acharya Sangye Gyang (Buddhapalita) said three harms: saying the self is meaningless, the self will become many, and it will become subject to birth and destruction. The first is that if the self and the aggregates are established as one in nature, then admitting the self is meaningless, because it will only become another term for the aggregates. For example, the moon and the one with a rabbit.
