And the fault of encountering is: If one thinks that even the previous self does not have the fault of making efforts in vain because the later self enjoys the result. If that is the case, then for another person who has not accumulated even a little bit of karma that becomes the cause of experiencing that karmic result, it will become that they enjoy the result of the karma accumulated by another person, because the result accumulated by another person established by its own nature is enjoyed by another person who is different from that self. As it is said in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds: "In the moment before nirvana, there is no creator of arising and ceasing, so there is no result of that. Others accumulate, others will enjoy." Thus it is said. In the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, although three other faults are also mentioned, it seems that they are only to refute the views of one's own school, and since here it is intended to refute them in common, they are not written down. Those two reasons are also stated in the twenty-seventh chapter: If this becomes other, then it will arise without it, and likewise there will be change there, and one will be born there without dying. Cessation and karma will be in vain, and the karmas done by others will be experienced separately by others, and so on, there will be such faults. Thus it is said. The two, such as karma being in vain, were established by Chandrakirti. If this becomes other, it means that the self of the previous life and the present self are different in their own nature. If that is the case, since nothing is obtained from the previous one, it will arise without relying on the previous one, and like the cloth not perishing when a pot is made, when the later self is born, the previous one will not perish and will remain, and it means that one will be born here without dying before. If the selves of previous and later lives, even if they are separate established by their own nature, there is no fault of karma being in vain and not being done and encountering, because they are of one continuum. If one says so, this is also like not establishing one's own characteristics as separate and needing to be established, and if the natures are different, then the same continuum is also not reasonable, like Maitreya and Nera-sbhas. As it is said in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds: "If there is a continuum there, there is no fault, the fault of the continuum has already been explained when examining earlier." Thus it is said. How to examine earlier is in that very text, Maitreya

The phenomena that depend on concealment, because they are other, do not belong to a single continuum. Those that are distinct by their own characteristics, it is not reasonable for them to belong to a single continuum. Thus, if they are established as distinct by their own characteristics, just like two different continua, they cannot be established as a single continuum. In the twenty-seventh chapter, it is also said: If gods and humans are other, the continuum will not be reasonable. Thus it is said. In short, if it is other established by its own nature, it must be considered amenable to examination by the reasoning that examines the manner of existence. However, if examined in detail by such reasoning, there is not even a particle of examinable object, so if the karma accumulated by the former, which is distinct by its own nature, is experienced by the latter, then it is completely the same as in the case of different continua, and it is impossible to distinguish them. Know this in all such cases. Then, since the experiencer of the past time and the rememberer of the later time are not the same, then according to your own system, just like different continua, it is unreasonable for the past experience to be remembered, and for the fruit of the karma accumulated in the past to be enjoyed later, is it? There is no fault. Because here, it is not contradictory that the continuum is one, but in other schools, it is not permissible for the continuum to be one. For example, just as the feet of a gray pigeon dwelling in a house with a container filled with yogurt, dwelling on a roof made of thatch, do not enter the yogurt container, but its footprints can be seen there. Even if the person of this life has not gone to the time of the previous life, it is not contradictory to remember the past experiences here. In the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, it is said: Abandoning the imputation that cause and effect are the same or different, if the continuum of conditioned phenomena, which is manifested by the difference of the cause, is only impermanent, then it is reasonable for the person who is imputed by its proximate cause to remember the previous life. Things are not established by their own characteristics, because there are such conditions approaching those things, and the transformation itself is not unreasonable, therefore, for the cause of things not being established by their own characteristics, the inconceivable differences of action should be completely examined. Just like this, like mud, for those who are in the yogurt container house, the pigeon dwelling on the roof covered with a great deal of thatch.
