Moreover, the reason why the Svātantrika-hetu is accepted by one's own system is that in conventional truth, there exists a self-characteristic that is established by its own nature. Therefore, whether or not the Svātantrika-hetu is established in one's own system depends on this extremely subtle negation. Thus, in the systems of those individuals, even the valid cognitions that perceive self-established natures without harm are not mistaken about the objects they perceive in conventional truth. Similarly, the conceptual thoughts that apprehend such natures as existing in sprouts and so forth are also not mistaken about the objects they grasp. If it were not so, and they were considered to be mistaken, then what valid cognition would be commonly apparent and established in both the systems of the proponents of entities and the two systems? As Candrakīrti asserts, even though there is no nature that appears as a self-characteristic, if one were to establish the existence of entities to the proponents of entities by means of the cognitions that appear in that way, then, in the subject or in the establishment, the absence of nature would already be established. What would the Svātantrika-hetu accomplish? If one thinks that it is sufficient for it to be established for the opponent alone, and that it does not need to be commonly apparent and established for both the Madhyamika and the two, then that is neither what one desires nor is it reasonable. If that were the case, then all formulations of proof would become mere assertions for others, and thus one would be following the Prasangika. Those who assert that external objects do not exist in conventional truth, such as the teacher Śāntarakṣita and others, also consider blue and so forth to be knowable substances in conventional truth, just as those who assert that they are truly existent. Therefore, those cognitions that perceive them rely on them and apprehend objects that are established by their own characteristics, and thus they are not mistaken in relation to mere blue. When eyes and other hidden objects are posited as subjects, although they cannot be directly established by direct perception, the proponents of philosophical systems assert that when the root of their establishment is traced back to its ultimate source, it must ultimately reach some direct perception. This is because it is like a chain of blind people leading each other. Therefore, they also assert that the root of their establishment must reach direct perception. At that time, the root direct perception is considered to be either an undeceptive cognition of others or an undeceptive self-cognition. Moreover, as previously explained, it perceives objects that are established by their own characteristics, and they assert that it must be established on the object as it appears. Therefore, they and those who assert that there is no self-established nature

For the two views of the Madhyamaka school, direct perception is unerring and seems to be in agreement. Thus, even without relying on direct perception, one can answer. In this way, for those who assert inherent existence, regarding both conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, the meaning of their being established by valid cognition is: it is necessary to establish that the nature of their respective modes of abiding exists on the object, because that can be refuted by reasoning. Therefore, it cannot be a valid means of proof. Secondly, it shows that the fault also makes the reason unestablished. In the Commentary on the Clear Words, it says: 'The way of stating the fault of the unestablished basis should also be applied to stating the fault of unestablishedness for the reason of "because it exists." ' This indicates this point. Regarding this, previously, for the views of the two debaters of emptiness and non-emptiness of inherent existence established by its own nature, there is no valid cognition of the subject that seems to be in agreement. Therefore, with the subject of the self-sufficient reason, the aspect of combining the sense-sphere of form and the non-self-born, or, with the reasoning that states there is no probandum, for the reason of "because it exists," there is also no valid cognition of the establisher that seems to be in agreement with those two views. Therefore, the ways in which the sign becomes unestablished should be understood as previously explained. Here, in the Commentary on the Clear Words, it says: 'Such a thing is like this, because this meaning that has been stated is something that this logician has himself admitted. How is it? The causes and so forth that produce the internal sense-spheres are only existent, because the Tathagata has said so. What the Tathagata has said is just so, for example, Nirvana is peace.' For this establisher established by others, what do you consider to be the meaning of the reason here? Is it because the Tathagata said so conventionally? Or because he said it ultimately? If it is conventionally, then for oneself, the meaning of the reason itself is not established.' And, 'Because in the ultimate, what is to be established and the establisher itself are not established, therefore the reason is the meaning of unestablishedness itself, and it is the meaning of contradiction.'
