Furthermore, it is said, "You consider it to be non-existent." You also teach the agent and the action itself in conventional terms. You consider it to be established in a state of mutual dependence. It is also said, "It is not reasonable for a result to arise from a cause that has temporarily ceased. You consider birth to be like a dream, not from a cause that has ceased." It is also said, "Whatever arises dependently, you consider that to be emptiness." The Commentary on the Entrance [to the Middle Way] also states, "Wise individuals, thinking that this system is faultless and beneficial, should undoubtedly accept it." It also says, "Therefore, merely accepting dependent arising, just as accepting the cause, because of accepting what is imputed in dependence upon it. Our system will not incur the fault that all conventions are cut off, and the opponent should also accept this." It is thus explicitly stated that one must make a commitment, and there are many similar instances. Again, in the Commentary on the Entrance, after reciting the four pledges, it is explained for the purpose of establishing them with reason: "It is not from that, nor from another, how could it be from both? How could it exist without a cause?" Thus, the four pledges are explained, and it is similarly stated in the Clear Words, so in the systems of the Protector Nagarjuna and Chandrakirti, there are self-assertions, commitments, and pledges. Refuting the fourth system: This system holds that although there is self-character in conventional terms, when analyzed with reason, self-character is also refuted in conventional terms, which seems unreasonable, as has been said before. The Madhyamikas consider that the third mode of proof, which is established by inference for the sake of others to establish the externalist proponents of entities in both systems, is the system of the teacher Chandrakirti, which is not reasonable. Because the Clear Words makes a specific refutation of such a view. If one accepts such a view, even if one does not use the term 'reasoning by the force of things,' it is impossible to deny that it is a Svātantrika reason. These will be further explained later, so I will not elaborate further here. Second, establishing one's own system: If, after refuting the Svātantrika system of the Prāsaṅgikas, one directly states one's own system, both will be understood, so first

It should be told. Regarding this, although the Commentary has said a lot, fearing the abundance of words, here only the main ones are explained. There are two: actually refuting the Svātantrika, and the way that it does not match itself. The first has two: showing the fault of the basis, the subject, not being established, and showing that the reason is also not established by that fault. The first has two: stating the assertion, and refuting it. The first is: These sections, among what is said in the Commentary, also seem very difficult to understand, so quoting the words of the Commentary to explain. As it says: If "sound is impermanent" is said, then the dharma and the subject of dharma are both grasping the common nature, not the difference. If the difference is grasped, then the terms of inference and what is to be inferred will disappear. Like this, if the sound produced from the four great elements is grasped, then it is not established in the opponent. However, if the quality of space is grasped, then it is not established in oneself (referring to the Buddhist). Similarly, when the Vaiśeṣika asserts that sound is impermanent, if the sound that is made is grasped, then it is not established in the other. However, if it is to be manifested, then it is not established in oneself. Similarly, the destruction as appropriate, if it has a cause, then it is not established in the Buddhist himself; if it is without a cause, then it is not established in the opponent. Therefore, just as here the commonality of dharma and subject of dharma is grasped, so here also only the subject of dharma that abandons the difference should be grasped, it is said. The meaning of this passage is: When the Buddhist asserts to the Vaiśeṣika that sound is impermanent, if "the sound that will arise" is grasped as the subject of dharma, then it is not established in the Vaiśeṣika; if "the sound of the quality of space" is made as the subject of dharma, then it is not established in oneself. Similarly, when the Vaiśeṣika also asserts to the manifestor that sound is impermanent, if "the sound that is made" is grasped as the subject of dharma, then it is not established in the manifestor; if "the sound that existed before, manifested by conditions" is grasped as the subject of dharma, then it is not established in oneself. Therefore, one cannot take one's own uncommon assertion as the subject of dharma, because the subject of dharma is the basis for both debaters to distinguish the different dharmas, so it must be established as mutually agreeable to both.
