If it is said that the ground is emptiness, then direct perception and its measurement of objects are also included within things, so by nature it must be empty. If one thinks that way, since it is non-existent, it will not obstruct. That treatise is, in the Refutation of Arguments: 'For a while, by direct perception of things, if one refutes by focusing on objects, by what do things become objects? That direct perception is non-existent.' This is the answer to that. In its commentary it also says: 'If you measure all things by direct perception and refute that all things are empty, then it is acceptable.' But that is also unreasonable. Why? Because within all things, the measure of direct perception is also included, therefore it is empty. What measures things is also empty. Therefore, the measure does not measure. If it does not measure, then obstruction is also unreasonable. Therefore, saying that all things are empty is unreasonable.' Because it is said that way. In the Four Hundred Verses it says: 'Existing and non-existing and existing-nonexisting.' And so on, what is said is, in its commentary it says: It shows that even after a long time, one cannot refute those who speak of emptiness. You say that you do not want emptiness, so how can it be the basis for wanting nothing? In the Entering the Middle Way Commentary it says: Because for those who say that things exist by imputation, it is unreasonable to speak of two, for the same reason, by relying on two to refute and answer, the Madhyamikas cannot find any fault in any way. As Aryadeva said: 'Existing and non-existing.' And so on, four lines are quoted. Thus, for those who believe that the real existence established by its own nature is refuted, and established as imputed existence, saying that things exist is believing that they are established by their own nature; saying that things do not exist is believing that the functions of things like form are all refuted. Because the knowledge that these two cannot be refuted is quoted, it cannot be the basis for not having one's own system. Moreover, views such as existence and non-existence are also very clear like the view of speaking of two. Therefore, it is as explained earlier in the context of refuting the four extremes and eliminating the way of speaking of existence and non-existence. What is said in the Sixty Stanza Reasoning is, in the commentary of that scripture it says: When

Thus, because there are no things, there is no possibility of self and other sides. At that time, the afflictions of those who see in this way will surely cease. Thus, the reason for the absence of sides is stated as the absence of things. However, this is established as things by their own characteristics or own nature. If it is established by function, it contradicts the statement that afflictions cease by seeing that it is absent. Therefore, it is said that the absence of sides that acknowledges things by their own nature is the absence of sides. As before that scripture, in the commentary on the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning": "Those who do not deeply contemplate this nature of dependent arising, and who conceive of the own characteristics of things, if they have an acceptance of things, then there will definitely only be the arising of attachment and hatred, holding unpleasant views, and disputes will arise from this." Therefore, it is said that imposing own characteristics on things is the acceptance of things. Therefore, those scriptures do not mean that the Madhyamika school has no self-established system, so it is not the case that they do not accept other systems by quoting the "Refutation of Arguments" and the "Four Hundred Verses." The meaning of what is said in the "Clear Words" should be understood as such. "Because there is nothing to be refuted, I also do not refute anything." As it is said, there are two things to be refuted. If it is said that the object of refutation is the imputation of inherent existence, and it is not refuted because of its absence, then it is unreasonable. Therefore, it should be taken as the object of refutation of the subject. In that commentary, it is said: "There is also no refuter." Therefore, saying that these two are absent means that for those who have no object of refutation and no refuter established by their own characteristics, you have grasped them as such, and you refute this with this, and thus you make slander. It is not that these two are not accepted as illusory, as in the "Refutation of Arguments": "An emanation is refuted by an emanation, a magician by a magical person, as illusion refutes illusion, this refutation is also the same." And also: "If that grasping has inherent existence, then it will not arise dependently, what grasping arises dependently, is that not emptiness? If grasping has inherent existence, who can refute that grasping? The rest are also the same, therefore there should be no blame."
