The basis to be realized is the aggregate. Upon that, the object to be realized is that smoke is pervaded by fire. It is absolutely not the case that one holds that the presence of smoke in the aggregate is pervaded by the presence of fire in the aggregate. How can one hold a pervasion that relies on a particular place, time, or direction? If it is not like that, then such a pervasion cannot be a definite basis for the aggregate. Therefore, on this basis, it is necessary to indicate the basis that needs to be definite. For example, on sound, the property to be established, impermanence, must follow both sound and pot. It is like not being able to establish impermanence as a part of sound. It should be understood that it is not reasonable to assert that the inference that establishes pervasion through reasoning is not a valid cognition. Thus, since it is not established by valid cognition, it is also unreasonable to say that it is established merely by the assertion of the proponent and opponent. If one uses mere assertion as a reason, then the opponent cannot be refuted, because his assertion establishes the point, and valid cognition is absent for both oneself and others. However, if one distinguishes assertions, saying that this one is established and that one is not, then if one distinguishes based on the reason of assertion, it is the same as the thesis. If one distinguishes based on the presence or absence of valid cognition, then the assertion of the absence of valid cognition is undermined. Refutation of the second view: In the context of examining suchness, not accepting the pledge of no self-nature is considered to mean not establishing a Svātantrika pledge. Is it that the pledge is not accepted because the reasoning that examines the presence or absence of self-nature does not establish the pledge? Or is it that the pledge is not accepted because it is the context of examining suchness, and this is posited as the reason? If it is the first case, if the meaning of pledging no self-nature is not established by reasoning, then the meaning of pledging self-nature will also not be refuted by reasoning, because the reason is the same. If one thinks that in the context of examining suchness, the meaning of pledging self-nature is also not refuted, then that is very unreasonable, because earlier logicians have said that analytical examination is to refute the views of others, and unexamined knowledge cannot refute the views of others.

Moreover, if one says that one does not need the commitment of one's own system, then why is it necessary to specifically emphasize this? Because one also does not need the inference that refutes the views of others. If one makes an inference to refute other schools of thought, then, as it was said earlier in the root verses and commentary of the *Refutation of Arguments*, refuting inherent existence is the same as establishing inherent non-existence, so there is no fallacy of the three possibilities in this. If it is not like that, but one says conversely that one establishes inherent non-existence, but does not refute inherent existence, then what is the answer? If one wants to completely eliminate inherent non-existence, then one must necessarily eliminate inherent existence without leaving anything out, is that what you think? If that is the case, then even if one eliminates inherent existence, one must similarly completely eliminate inherent non-existence without leaving anything out. If you say that it is because it is the occasion for examining suchness, therefore it is not permissible to commit to inherent non-existence, etc., then please state the reason for that. If you say that if it is established in the occasion for examining suchness, then it must be established in the ultimate truth, so one does not accept it, is that what you think? That is not reasonable. Like this, if you do not even allow the occasion for examining suchness, then you must think that it is impossible for the Madhyamika's intellect to analyze. If you allow that occasion, then you must necessarily acknowledge the analyst, the intellect of analysis, the basis of analysis, and the external opponent with whom one analyzes. In that occasion, how can all established things have to be established in the ultimate truth? A mere inference is what is acknowledged by others or the ultimate result of what is acknowledged. Therefore, saying that even without valid cognition, one can make an inference is also not satisfactory. Therefore, it should be refuted as the first view was refuted earlier. Furthermore, even if one distinguishes and says that there is no commitment in the occasion for examining suchness, but there is commitment in conventional truth, that is also not reasonable. Because the occasion for examining suchness is not permissible in the ultimate truth, so it must be done in conventional truth, which is contradictory. If there is nothing in the occasion for examining suchness, then that means there is nothing in the ultimate truth. Since there is no Madhyamika who thinks that there is commitment in the ultimate truth, that cannot be a characteristic of the Prasangika. Refuting the third view: Saying that the Madhyamika has no commitment even in conventional truth is, as said earlier, the object to be refuted by reason.
