As mentioned above. Thus, in the treatises of the noble father and son (referring to Maitreya and Asanga) and the two teachers (referring to Nagarjuna and Aryadeva), the self-nature, etc., that are negated by saying that if it exists by nature, if it exists by its own essence, if it exists by its own characteristics, if it exists as a substance, should be understood as previously shown. The meaning of the words that show that those do not exist should also be understood as showing that there is no meaning like that which is clung to by ignorance. Secondly, the way to apply or not apply those negations to other things is: just as when saying that things that are completely non-existent, such as a rabbit's horn and the child of a barren woman, do not exist, it is not necessary to add that distinction, similarly, for knowable things, although they exist in some times and places and do not exist in others, when saying that they do not exist in that time and place, it is also not necessary to add that distinction. Furthermore, when the Madhyamikas refute the uncommon imputations of those who assert inherent existence, which they do not accept as established in conventional truth, it is necessary to add the distinction if one considers those cases, but in reality, it is not necessary to newly add the distinction of inherent existence established by its own essence, because those meanings have already been accepted by those proponents of philosophical tenets. Other than these, for the things that the Madhyamikas establish in conventional truth, no matter what they are, when refuting those, if that distinction is not added, the reasoner of the refuter himself will also be equally harmed, so it will become merely a seemingly valid refutation, so it is necessary to add it. Furthermore, as previously stated, for the things that the Madhyamikas establish in conventional truth, it is necessary that they are not harmed by the reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not and by conventional valid cognition; if it is not so, then the distinction of not accepting Ishvara and others as existing in conventional truth, while accepting form, sound, etc., as existing will be completely impossible, therefore, like this is the path, like this is not the path, this tenet is reasonable in this way, this is unreasonable in this way, etc., no matter what kind of worldly and transworldly establishment, it will be impossible to establish, therefore, the characteristic that all the establishments of samsara and nirvana are reasonable for emptiness of self-nature is not permissible. Therefore, even if it is not harmed by valid cognition, if one wants to refute it, it is a place of laughter for the wise. Therefore, to refute those,

When refuting, one should add the distinction of "not being real." In the commentaries on the Four Hundred and the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, it appears very often that this distinction is added when refuting the object to be refuted. However, in the Root Wisdom Treatise, Buddhapalita's treatise, the Clear Words, and the root verses and commentary of the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, there are also many instances where the distinction is added, perhaps because they are lengthy. Even if it is not added, one should consider that the reason for not adding it is that the key points of those cases where it is added are easy to understand, so even in cases where it is not added, it should be added. This is because there is no difference between adding and not adding in these cases. Furthermore, when analyzing, the distinction of analysis, "it is not existent," is often added. This is because, as mentioned earlier, if things were established by their own nature, they would have to be found by the reasoning that analyzes their mode of existence. But since they are not found, it is said that things established by their own nature do not exist. Therefore, it should be understood that this is the same as the key point of "not having a nature established by its own nature." As it says in the commentary on the Four Hundred: "If these things were not deceptive like fire wheels and illusions, so that they would not become non-existent, then, in that case, it would necessarily be reasonable that, when analyzed, their own nature would become very clearly visible, like the sala tree. But these things are merely the cause of inversion, so when burned by the fire of analysis, they do not become non-existent." Third, regarding whether or not to add the distinction of ultimate truth to the object to be refuted, it is very unreasonable to say that adding the distinction of ultimate truth to the object to be refuted is only the view of the Svatantrika Madhyamikas. In the commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, quoting from the Mother Sutra, it says: "Venerable Subhuti, is there also nothing to be attained and nothing to be realized?" Subhuti replied: "Venerable Shariputra, there is attainment and there is realization, but not in the manner of two. Venerable Shariputra, attainment and realization are spoken of in conventional truth, and the stream-enterer, the once-returner, the non-returner, the arhat, the solitary buddha, and the bodhisattva are also spoken of in conventional truth. But in ultimate truth, there is no attainment and no realization." Therefore, one must acknowledge it as such.
