In summary. Do not focus on merely refuting the tenets established solely by the proponents of the Samkhya school. For refuting the object to be refuted in this way is not done because of being overwhelmed by tasks, but because one sees that the wrong conceptions that hold the object to be refuted bind sentient beings to samsara, and thus one refutes its object. All sentient beings are bound to samsara because of innate ignorance; and conceptual ignorance exists only in those who propound philosophical systems, so it is not suitable as the root of samsara. It is extremely important to gain a definite understanding of this. Therefore, the ultimate wrong conception that grasps the object to be refuted is the first of the twelve links, namely, innate ignorance. And the objects to be refuted that are conceptually imputed are merely superimpositions based on the former. Therefore, all ways of grasping of non-conceptual consciousnesses such as eye consciousness can never be refuted by reasoning. Therefore, the mind whose way of grasping is to be refuted by reasoning is only conceptual consciousness, and that is either the two kinds of self-grasping, or the conceptual thoughts that impute distinctions onto the objects established by them. Do not do this to all conceptual thoughts. So, what is the way in which ignorance imputes self-nature? In general, in this teacher's treatises, even for things that are established merely conventionally, terms such as self-nature or self-essence are often used. But here, it refers to the fact that for any object, whether a person or a thing, it is not established by the power of the mind, but rather one grasps that these things have some kind of state or way of being on their own side. One should identify the concept of self or self-nature by examining and determining the way in which the objects grasped by this way of grasping, namely, the way in which things abide, each in its own way. For "These are all without autonomy, therefore there is no self." In the commentary to the Four Hundred Verses, it says: "Here, that which has its own essence, self-nature, autonomy, and is not dependent on others, is." Thus, these are declared to be synonyms. Among these, not dependent on others does not mean not dependent on causes and conditions, but rather the consciousness that nominally cognizes the object is called "other," because it is not established by its power, so it is not dependent on others. Therefore, autonomous

That is to say, the respective situations or ways of being of those things are their unique essences. That is what is called self-nature or own-nature. For example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, how that snake is posited from the perspective of the mind that apprehends the snake, if that is set aside, and if one analyzes what the snake is like from the perspective of its own nature, since the snake itself does not exist on the object, it is impossible to analyze its characteristics. Similarly, when the way these phenomena appear from the perspective of the mind of a conventionalist is set aside, and when one analyzes on the object what the own-nature of these phenomena is like, they do not exist at all. If one does not think in this way, but instead believes that these phenomena have their own measurable way of being, rather than being posited by conventional consciousness, then the commentary on the Four Hundred says, "It is only because there is conception that things exist; without conception, things do not exist. These things are definitely like a snake mistaken for a coiled rope, and are certainly not constituted by their own nature." Thus, it explains the way of not being constituted by one's own nature in that way. Therefore, what is established on the object from the perspective of its own nature, rather than being posited by the power of the inner mind, is called self or own-nature. When it does not exist on the basis of the individual, which is the basis of distinction, it is called the selflessness of the individual; and when it does not exist on phenomena such as the eyes and nose, it is called the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, it can be inferred that believing that self-nature exists on individuals and phenomena is grasping at the two selves. The commentary on the Four Hundred says, "What is called self is the own-nature of things that does not depend on others, that is, self-nature. The absence of that is selflessness. It is understood as two by the distinction of phenomena and individuals, namely, the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of individuals." It is said as such. If it is unreasonable to believe that an individual is established by his own characteristics, because that would be grasping at the self of the individual. Otherwise, focusing on other individuals and believing that they are established by their own characteristics would also become grasping at the self of the individual. If one accepts that, then it would have to become the view of the aggregates as a real self, because there one would not think, "This is me," so it is unreasonable, because it is not like the view of the aggregates as a real self. If someone asks, believing that an individual has self-nature
