So say the Buddhas. Now, what is this ignorance like? The mind that clings to the belief that inner and outer phenomena are established by their own characteristics, and imputes such a nature, is ignorance here. In the commentary on the Four Hundred, it says: 'Consciousness particularly clings to the nature of things themselves. Due to the ignorance of afflictions, it is attached to things and becomes the seed for entering samsara. When all of this ceases, samsara will cease.' To explain this, it is said: 'The seed of existence is consciousness, and objects are its field of activity. If one sees the selflessness of objects, the seed of existence will cease.' As explained before, by seeing the lack of inherent nature in objects, the cause of attachment, consciousness, which has become the seed of existence, when all of this ceases, samsara will cease for the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained forbearance of the unborn Dharma.' So it is said. That is also called 'truth-grasping.' 'Just as the body has dominion over the body, ignorance pervades all. Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance.' In the commentary on the Four Hundred, it says: 'Ignorance is confusion arising from contemplating how things are truly. Therefore, it strongly clings to the true nature of things.' Thus, if ignorance is the root of samsara, then it is not reasonable to say in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds and the Clear Words that the view of self is the root of samsara, because there are not two main causes. If you ask this, the views on ignorance and the view of self, the views of other teachers have already been explained in the section on the intermediate being. Here, the view of the teacher Chandrakirti is: what other Madhyamikas consider to be the obscuration of knowledge, namely, clinging to things as true, is considered to be ignorance. Moreover, this is also considered to be afflictive ignorance. As quoted earlier, the commentary on the Four Hundred says that it is afflictive, and in the commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, it also says: 'Because this confuses beings about the view of how things exist, it is ignorance.' Ignorance clings to the non-existent nature of things, obscuring the view of self.

whose nature is conventional truth. Thus, by the power of ignorance, which is afflicted and completely encompassed by the limbs of existence, the conventional truth is established. As it is explained as the first limb of the twelve links of dependent origination, it is an affliction and not an obscuration of knowledge. So, what is the obscuration of knowledge for? This will be shown below. Therefore, this first ignorance of the twelve limbs is the root of samsara, and the view of the perishable is also said to be the root of samsara, because ignorance is general and the view of the perishable is specific, so there is no contradiction. So, ignorance is the opposite of wisdom, and wisdom is not just any kind of wisdom, but the wisdom that realizes the selflessness of reality. Its opposite is not just the absence of that wisdom, or just something different from that wisdom, so it is holding onto its opposite. That is attaching to self, and there are two types of that: attachment to the self of phenomena and attachment to the self of person. Therefore, both attachment to the self of phenomena and attachment to the self of person are ignorance. Therefore, when the view of the perishable is shown to be the root of all other afflictions, it is not that ignorance is not shown to be the root. "As long as there is attachment to the aggregates, there is attachment to self in it." Thus, it is shown that the ignorance of being deluded about the self of phenomena is the cause of being deluded about the self of person. The way the two categories of ignorance become cause and effect shows that there is no contradiction in the view of the perishable being shown as the root of all afflictions other than ignorance. If one does not know how to explain the Teacher's intention in that way, it is very difficult to resolve the contradiction of the two roots of samsara being explained. That kind of way of identifying ignorance is the view of the Protector Nagarjuna. In the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness, it says: "Whatever is truly conceived of things born from causes and conditions, that is what the Teacher called ignorance, from which the twelve limbs arise. Because of truly seeing that things are empty, if one knows well, ignorance will not arise, that is the cessation of ignorance, therefore the twelve limbs cease." Thus it is said. In the twenty-sixth chapter of the Root Wisdom, it also says: "If ignorance ceases, then all actions will not arise. The cessation of ignorance is because with wisdom meditating on that reality."
