Therefore, the illusion of clinging to existence will disappear. Similarly, reasoning does not establish something new that has never existed before, like a seed sprouting a new shoot. Rather, it generates a certainty that allows one to recognize things as they are. In the Refutation of Arguments, it is said: 'Without words, and without non-words, refutation is established.' Here, 'without words' means to make understood, not to exclude. Its self-commentary also says: 'If you can establish refutation without words, that is, without non-words, then what is the use of your saying, 'All things are without inherent existence'?' To this, it should be explained: 'The statement 'All things are without inherent existence' does not make things without inherent existence. Rather, it makes people understand that for things that are without inherent existence, things are without inherent existence. For example, someone says: 'Devadatta is not at home, but Devadatta is at home.' When he is not there, some people say he is not there. This statement does not make Devadatta not exist, but merely shows that Devadatta cannot be at home. Similarly, the statement 'Things are without inherent existence' does not make things without inherent existence. Rather, because all things are without inherent existence, like an illusionary person, they are separated from the essence of a real person. Therefore, for those who are deluded by ignorant children, who cling to things as having inherent existence, it makes them understand that things do not have inherent existence. If things do not have inherent existence, then without words, that is, without non-words, it is completely established that things do not have inherent existence. So, what is the use of saying 'without inherent existence'?' This is unreasonable.' As it is clearly stated, it should be understood as such. Therefore, if it exists, it cannot be prevented, and if it does not exist, it does not need to be negated, so it is free from affirmation and negation. Therefore, engaging in many rational speculations of affirmation and negation is just wanting to indulge in the words of terminology, without any overall meaning arising for either the reasoning or the path of affirmation and negation.

Now, it is to speak some illogical nonsense, stating reasons that if it exists, one cannot refute it, and if it does not exist, there is no need to refute it. While preventing others from engaging in refutation and establishment debates, one also wants others not to engage in refutation and establishment. Because stating reasons itself implies the need to refute the views that others believe need to be refuted and established, this is unreasonable, because if it exists, one cannot refute it, and if it does not exist, there is no need to refute it. The refutation by noble reason is to dispel the inverted and mistaken conceptualizations, while the establishment by reason is a method to generate non-inverted certainty. Therefore, wanting to dispel inverted thoughts and wanting to generate non-inverted thoughts, one should follow in the footsteps of logicians such as Nagarjuna, thereby generating a mind of certainty that is not inverted in refutation and establishment. In this way, the refutation by reason is to generate non-inverted certainty by refuting the inverted way of grasping. So, what kind of mind's object of grasping is refuted by reason? In general, the conceptualizations that grasp the object to be refuted are infinite, but one should well recognize what the inverted conceptualization that is the root of all faults is, and refute its object of attachment, because if it is eliminated, then all faults will be dispelled. Furthermore, the antidotes to other afflictions such as desire are only partial antidotes, while the antidote to ignorance becomes the antidote to everything. Therefore, ignorance is the basis of all faults. As it is said in the Prasannapadā: The Sutra Pitaka of the Buddhas, etc., the nine teachings are established relying on the two truths. Among the realms of activity of sentient beings in the world, what is the most extensive, is truly declared here. Among them, what is said to eliminate desire will not cause hatred to cease. What is said to eliminate hatred will also not cause desire to cease. What is said to eliminate pride, etc., will also not destroy other stains. Therefore, these are not the most universal, and these are also not the most important. What is said to eliminate delusion destroys all afflictions. All afflictions truly rely on delusion.
