Through the power of dimness, what is seen is not real, but by itself, it becomes the realm of the noble ones who are free from the dimness of ignorance. Its very nature is regarded as their nature. Thus it is said. The unborn dharma that has become the nature of things is also merely non-existent because it is nothing at all, therefore it is essentially non-existent. Therefore, it does not exist in the nature of things. Thus it is said. Some people think that the ultimate truth is merely the cessation of the elaborations of what is to be refuted, such as the self and what belongs to the self, and not like blue and yellow, etc., appearing in the object of the unerring wisdom that realizes reality, in a way that is autonomously established, and being certain that it exists, is the view of realizing the profound meaning. And they think that if sentient beings realize that these internal and external dharmas, to which they are attached as self and what belongs to self, are without self-nature, then it is a fault of the correct view. This is completely contrary to all the scriptures of the Great and Small Vehicles. Because they think that the root of binding all sentient beings in samsara is attachment to self, which must be eliminated. But they think that merely realizing that the object to which I am attached is without self-nature does not eliminate self-grasping, but realizing that another dharma unrelated to this exists truly can eliminate self-grasping. This is like, assuming that there is no snake in the east but thinking that there is a snake, being afraid and suffering, to eliminate this suffering, it is not thinking that there is no snake at all in the east that can eliminate snake-grasping. But saying, you think that there is a tree in the west, and this will eliminate snake-grasping and suffering, there is no difference at all. Therefore, those who want to obtain happiness should stay away from this view, and rely on the definitive scriptures that can destroy the root of ignorance that binds samsara and all decadence, and the vast collection of intelligence that can deeply understand its meaning and cannot be interpreted otherwise, the treatises elucidated by the noble Nagarjuna and his son, thereby crossing the ocean of existence. Preventing wrong views about what is to be refuted,

Therefore, this is very important, so it is explained in detail. Third, there are three points to identify the refutation of one's own system: identifying the actual object of refutation; explaining whether the refutation applies to other refutations; and explaining whether the distinction of ultimate truth applies to the refutation. The first point is: In general, there are two types of refutation: the refutation of the path and the refutation of reason. The first of these is as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "The obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge are shown there as all obscurations; it is said that liberation is achieved when they are exhausted." As stated, there are two types of obscurations: the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge. This is the refutation that exists on the knowable, because if this were not the case, all sentient beings would be liberated effortlessly. The refutation of reason is as stated in the Vigrahavyāvartanī: "Or some may think of an illusionary woman as a real woman; this which prevents the arising of wrong conceptions by illusion is like that." Its autocommentary states: "Or some men may wrongly conceive of an illusionary woman, who is empty of inherent existence, as a real woman. Therefore, because this wrong conception gives rise to desire, the Tathāgata or the Śrāvakas of the Tathāgata conjure up an illusion, and use it to prevent this wrong conception. Similarly, my words of emptiness, like an illusion, can prevent the conception of inherent existence in all things that are empty of inherent existence, like an illusionary woman." As stated, there are two cases: taking inverted conceptions as the object of refutation, and taking the inherent existence apprehended by these conceptions as the object of refutation. However, the main object of refutation is the latter, because in order to eliminate the inverted subject, it is first necessary to refute the object it apprehends. This is like refuting the inherent existence that is established by its own nature on the self of persons and phenomena through dependent origination. This object of refutation must be something that does not exist on the knowable, because if it exists, it cannot be refuted. Even so, because the imputation of existence arises, it must be refuted. And refutation is not like smashing a vase with a hammer, but rather generating a definitive understanding that recognizes what does not exist as not existing, that is, generating certainty about what does not exist.
