Because it is not the root of bondage, and even if one ascertains and meditates on those things as being without inherent existence, it will not harm the clinging to ignorance that has no beginning. Even if one ultimately realizes those meanings directly, it will not cause the innate afflictions to cease. Therefore, when ascertaining with view, it is mainly about ascertaining the meaning of how innate ignorance grasps as emptiness. If one does not understand how to refute the objects of the imputed clinging, and abandons refuting the way innate ignorance clings, then when refuting the self of a person, refuting the self that is permanent, single, and independent, and when refuting the self of phenomena, refuting the indivisible particles of what is grasped, the indivisible moments of what grasps, and the three characteristics of inherent nature, etc., which are merely posited by those who propound tenets, is not permissible in any way. If it is not like that, then when ascertaining with view, one has only ascertained that much, so when meditating, one must also meditate on that much. Because ascertaining with view is for the sake of meditation. Therefore, even if what is manifested and habituated through meditation reaches its ultimate point, it is only that much. In this way, merely by seeing the emptiness of the two selves that are merely posited by imputed clinging, one wants to make the innate afflictions cease, that is too extreme. The Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra says: "When realizing no-self, one abandons the permanent self, this is also not desired as a basis for clinging to self, therefore knowing the reason of no-self, one can cut the root of the view of self, saying this is very laughable." And the commentary also says: "In order to clarify the meaning that is not related to each other by way of example, it is said: Like seeing a snake living in a hole in the wall of one's own house, and then dispelling the doubt that 'there is no elephant here,' wanting to use this to dispel the fear of snakes, this is truly becoming a laughingstock for others!" Although this is said about the selflessness of a person, it is the same for the selflessness of phenomena. One can apply it like this: "When realizing no-self, one abandons the imputed self, this is also not desired as a basis for ignorance, therefore knowing the reason of no-self, one can cut the root of ignorance, saying this is very laughable." So, according to what the teacher Śāntideva said earlier, the unconditioned and not dependent on others, the self-

If it is said that the nature of "suchness" is spoken of through the lens of grasping at extremes, or whether such a nature exists, this is because the "dharmata of dharmas" is established as "nature," which is uncreated and not dependent on others. It exists. The commentary on the *Entering the Middle Way* says, "If someone asks whether the teacher acknowledges the existence of such a special nature, then based on what did the Bhagavan say that whether the Tathagatas appear or not, the dharmata of dharmas remains constant?" In detail, the so-called "dharmata" exists. What is this "dharmata"? It is the nature of the eyes and so on (the six senses). What is their nature? It is their uncreated nature and the state of not depending on others, which is the self-nature that can be realized by wisdom free from the darkness of ignorance. Who would say whether it exists or not? If it does not exist, then why would Bodhisattvas practice the Paramita path? It is because Bodhisattvas strive so diligently with hundreds of thousands of efforts to realize the dharmata!" This is established with the scriptural evidence. Then, didn't we previously refute that all dharmas have inherent existence? Haven't we repeatedly answered that for dharmas that are not fabricated by the mind, there is not even a particle of inherent existence established by its own nature? Therefore, for such a nature, let alone other dharmas, the dharmata, the ultimate truth, is not established at all. As the *Clear Words* says, "That which does not mistake fire in the three times, the original, uncreated nature, which does not arise later from not existing before, which is not like the heat of water, this shore and the other shore, long and short, which is not dependent on causes and conditions, that is said to be nature. So, is the nature of fire like that? It neither exists by its own nature, nor does it not exist. Although this is so, in order to dispel the fear of the listeners, it can be falsely established, and in conventional truth it is said to exist." Thus, the nature also...
