Because things are not observed by their own nature, because whatever is born dependently, like an image, is not born of its own nature. If whatever is born dependently, is that not just birth? How can it be expressed by the term unborn? If it is said to be unborn, then it should not be said to be born dependently. Therefore, if it is said that this is unreasonable because they contradict each other, then, alas, how sad, even the deaf and the heartless can refute this statement, this is truly a difficult problem for us! When we say that whatever is born dependently, like an image, is not born of its own nature, where is the opportunity for the opponent to argue? Thus it is said, so it is important to distinguish these differences. In the Sutra Requested by Non-Afflicted also says: Whatever is born from conditions, that is unborn. In it, there is no nature of birth. Whatever depends on conditions, that is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness, that is mindful. The first verse says: Whatever is born from conditions, that is unborn. Having said this, the way to show the unborn is the second verse: In it, there is no nature of birth. This is the distinction of what is to be refuted, that is, not born of its own nature. Not understanding this, some who hear these words only say that birth is non-birth, dependence is non-dependence, and it seems that those who say such contradictory words are considered to have superior views. In the Lankavatara Sutra quoted in the Clear Words, it also says: Great Wisdom, considering that it is not born of its own nature, I said that all dharmas are unborn. It is said very clearly like this. Regarding whether or not to add the distinction of ultimate truth to the negation of birth, etc., the answer is actually already included. However, the answer that specifically distinguishes this point will be explained below. Those refutations, all those refutations show that for selflessness, the way of establishing cause and effect, etc., cannot be refuted. In general, the ultimate purpose of refutation is that the arguments of how one refutes others are also applied to the refuter without exception. Therefore, your statement is only the ultimate result of seeming refutation.

This is because, just as one prevents others' positions by examining whether or not there is harm from reasoning, one must also refute the reasoning that refutes in that way by turning it back. If you admit that form and so on exist, so those examinations apply; if we do not have our own tenets, so those examinations do not apply, if you think this way, this is unable to avoid those faults, which will be explained in the context of determining which of the consequentialist and autonomous schools establishes it. Fourth, it is shown that refuting all four possibilities of existence, non-existence, etc., is not valid as a refutation. In the Madhyamaka texts, all four possibilities of existence or inherent existence, non-existence, both, and neither are refuted, and since there is no phenomenon that is not included in them, if you think that reasoning refutes everything, this is as previously explained, there are two kinds of things, among which things that are established by their own nature are refuted regardless of which of the two truths you think they exist in; and things that can perform a function are not refuted conventionally. As for non-existence, if you think that for the unconditioned and so on, there is non-existence established by its own nature, then such non-existence is also refuted. Similarly, both existence and non-existence of such things are also refuted, and neither is also refuted, because neither established by its own nature is also refuted, so the way to refute all four possibilities should be understood in that way. If you refute all four possibilities without making such distinctions, when refuting existence and non-existence, after refuting by saying "it is not those two," and then refuting again by saying "neither is not," then it is a direct contradiction of the commitment, and if you argue that there is no fault even if that is the case, then we will not argue with madmen. Furthermore, when inherent existence or self established by its own nature is refuted on the aggregates, wisdom arises thinking that there is no inherent existence or self, and if you refute the object of that wisdom—non-inherent existence—then that is refuting the view of the Madhyamikas, because it is refuting the object of the wisdom that realizes that all phenomena are without inherent existence. To those who want to refute both existence and non-existence, this should be asked: How is the object of the wisdom that ascertains that there is no inherent existence on the aggregates—non-inherent existence—refuted?
