That is, clinging to it, because things truly exist in themselves in the conventional. Thus, although the four, such as permanence, are commonly known in the world, clinging to them is said to be inverted in the conventional. Although the four, such as impermanence, are not commonly known to the whole world, clinging to them is said to be non-inverted. Thus, the conceptual thought that clings to the aggregates as impermanent, although mistaken in the field of appearance, does not have the harm of a valid cognition in the definite way of clinging, so it is called non-inverted or not mistaken. The sense consciousnesses are mistaken in the field of appearance, and there is no other part that is not mistaken, so they cannot be called not mistaken. Although the sense consciousnesses are similar to being mistaken in appearance, from the perspective of worldly people, through the aspects of existence and non-existence that conform to appearance, the sense consciousnesses that appear as images, etc., are false conventional truths, while the other harmless sense consciousnesses are true conventional truths. The object of the way of clinging of the conceptual thought that clings to the aggregates as permanent, etc., does not exist in name, so it can be refuted. But the object of clinging to impermanence, etc., exists in name, so it cannot be refuted by reasoning. Just as the four, such as permanence, that are established in the ultimate or by their own nature, are impossible, so are the four, such as impermanence, that are established in these two. Therefore, considering that only in relation to this, clinging to the existence of these eight has no distinction between inversion and non-inversion. Whether one applies permanence or impermanence, happiness or suffering, self or non-self to form, it is said to be applied to characteristics. If one says that refuting with reasoning the ignorance that imputes self-nature to things contradicts not refuting the meaning of conventional terms, because the "Entering the Middle Way" says: Ignorance obscures self-nature, therefore it is conventional truth. The things created by it appear as real, the Victorious One said it is conventional, therefore. Thus, sound and so on are established as conventional truths by the power of ignorance, so there is this fault. There is no fault, because the truth that establishes sound and so on as conventional truths is a truth established by thought, and that thought must also be clinging to truth, so it is truth in the face of ignorance that imputes self-nature. Therefore, the two Arhats who have abandoned defiled ignorance and the Bodhisattvas above the eighth ground

For Bodhisattvas, these appearances are of a fabricated nature, not truly existent, because there is no appearance that claims to be true. Therefore, the reason for saying that they are merely conventional for those without true clinging lies in this. Therefore, although form, sound, etc., are true in the face of ignorance, form, sound, etc., are not established by that ignorance. For example, when the mistaken consciousness of grasping a snake arises on a rope, the rope is a snake in the face of that mistaken consciousness, but that mistaken consciousness does not establish the nature of the rope. The mind that establishes form, sound, etc., is the six unimpaired consciousnesses of the eye, etc. Because the objects established by these exist conventionally, reason does not obstruct them. However, they do not exist conventionally as they are grasped by ignorance, because this is the imputation of a self-nature of inherent existence onto things, and such a self-nature does not exist even conventionally. Therefore, reason also refutes it conventionally. If reason does not refute this, then things will not be established as illusory in convention. Because delusion imputes distinctions such as likeable and dislikeable onto the imputed nature, attachment and hatred, etc., arise. Therefore, reason is able to refute the way these are grasped. As it is said in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses: "Attachment and the like also arise because delusion imputes distinctions such as likeable and dislikeable onto the very nature of objects that are universally imputed by delusion. Therefore, they arise inseparably from delusion and also depend on delusion, because delusion is the principal one." Thus it is said. Therefore, although these afflictions are innate, having arisen from beginningless time, because reason is able to refute their way of grasping, their objects of clinging do not exist even conventionally. Therefore, there are two possibilities regarding the objects of innate minds: whether or not reason can refute them. The valid cognitions that establish these conventions of form, sound, etc., the objects of these innate minds, exist conventionally, so reason does not refute them. Thus, according to the systems of Acharya Buddhapalita and Acharya Chandrakirti, the self-nature of inherent existence is refuted even conventionally.
