That which is established in dependence is the basis of conceptual consciousness, and similarly, objects are also established in dependence, and are said to be the objects of conceptual consciousness. The consciousnesses are the manifest establishers, and the objects are considered to be the manifest characteristics. Therefore, this teacher and the teacher Sthiramati are similar in their view of external objects, but it seems that the way they establish the sense faculties and objects is different. Previously, when refuting that sense consciousness is valid in its own characteristics, it was said, "Because things that exist in other forms appear in other forms." Therefore, the consciousness of the senses appears to be established by its own characteristics, such as form and sound, but since there is no such thing as its own characteristics in terms of appearance, this teacher considers these to be mistaken even in terms of convention. Even so, there is no reason why the consciousnesses of the senses should not be considered valid in terms of convention for establishing objects such as form and sound, because the reason for establishing these as mistaken is that there is no such thing as an object established by its own characteristics as it appears. This is established by the wisdom of reasoning that examines whether or not there is inherent existence, but it cannot be established by conventional validity, so it is not mistaken in relation to conventional consciousness. The consciousnesses that appear as two moons and reflections, etc., are established without relying on reasoning consciousness, but only by conventional validity, because the meaning of the appearance, such as two moons and faces, does not exist. Therefore, it is also reasonable to distinguish between true and false conventionalities in these and the former. Even if there is a difference in realizing delusion based on reasoning consciousness and conventional validity, just as the meaning that appears as a face, etc., does not exist, the meaning that appears as its own characteristic also does not exist, and just as form, etc., that is empty of its own characteristic exists, so does the reflection, etc., that is empty of a face, etc. Therefore, even if we rely on the self-satisfied mind of convention, there is no difference between being inverted and not inverted. If you think so, then both the entity established by its own characteristics and the meaning that appears like a face are equally non-existent in convention, and both form, etc., and reflection, etc., are equally existent in convention. The Commentary on Entering the Middle Way says, "Form arises in dependence."
