It is said: Knowledge is direct perception. What kind of knowledge? That which is free from conceptualization. What is conceptualization? It is the flickering consciousness that engages in particularly superimposing names and categories onto objects. Because it is free from that, the five sense consciousnesses, because they only apprehend the inexpressible particular characteristics of objects, are expressed by the term "direct perception." As it is said. Knowledge that is free from conceptualization and non-deceptive is considered to be direct perception. Among these, non-deceptive means apprehending the particular characteristics of objects as they exist. Therefore, the five direct perceptions of sense consciousness measure the particular characteristics, so the particular characteristics of forms, sounds, etc., are the objects to be measured by these five direct perceptions. Therefore, the place where they become valid cognition is also the particular characteristics of these five objects. This teacher, as will be explained, does not even accept self-established nature or particularly established nature in conventional terms, so how could the sense consciousnesses accept particular characteristics as valid cognition? Therefore, here, negating that they are valid cognition is negating that they are considered valid cognition of the particular characteristics of the five objects. The way of negating is: The Blessed One said that the consciousnesses are false and deceptive, and this negates it. Furthermore, because it is said to be deceptive, it negates non-deceptive, thereby negating being valid cognition, because non-deceptive is the characteristic of valid cognition. So, what is the way of deceiving? It is thinking that things that exist in one way appear in another way. This is what is said, for the sense consciousnesses, the five objects such as forms and sounds appear as their own characteristics even though they are not established by their own characteristics, so they are not valid cognition of their own characteristics. In short, the sense consciousnesses are not valid cognition of the particular characteristics of the five objects, because they deceive in relation to the appearance of the particular characteristics of the five objects, that is, the five objects appear as their own characteristics while being empty of their own characteristics. For example, it is thought to be like the knowledge that perceives two moons. To this, proponents of inherent existence argue that if forms, sounds, etc., do not have a nature established as their own characteristics, then they are considered to be non-entities devoid of all functional capacity. If the particular characteristics of the five objects do not become direct valid cognition, then the place where the five objects become valid cognition

There is not. Even if it becomes valid for the five objects, it is desired to become valid for its own characteristics. This teacher believes that if self-characteristics or essence are established, it will become true. Therefore, for the valid means of establishing the truth of objects, it is necessary to become valid for self-characteristics. However, since objects are false, it is not necessary to become valid for self-characteristics for the valid means of establishing them. As stated in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses: "It is not reasonable to eliminate the view of thatness with the view of the world, because that is only the valid means of the world, and the meaning it aims at is also the false, deceptive Dharma." Therefore, because the validity of being self-characterized is prevented, it is not necessary to merely prevent validity. Therefore, for the knowledge of conventional truth, it is not a general prevention of validity. If it is not like this, then the statement that "non-deceptive knowledge is seen as valid in the world" is not reasonable, because validity is prevented for all conventional knowledge. And in the Clear Words, it is also said: "Therefore, in this way, from the four valid means, the world establishes the understanding of meaning." This contradicts the establishment of the system of direct perception, inference, scripture, and analogy. The establishment of validity and the object to be measured by their own nature is prevented, but the dependent arising of validity and the object to be measured in relation to each other is not prevented. It says in that very text: "Those are also established by mutual dependence. If there is validity, then it becomes the meaning of the object to be measured. If there is the meaning of the object to be measured, then it becomes validity. Validity and the object to be measured are not established by their own nature." Thus it is said. Therefore, if there is no harm of being contaminated by the causes of internal and external confusion such as cataracts, then, due to the influence of ignorance, the delusion of the sense consciousness and so on appearing to grasp objects that are without self-nature but appear to have self-nature does not harm the correct view of conventional truth. The Entering the Middle Way also says: "False seeing is also considered to be of two types: clear sense organs and defective sense organs. The knowledge of those with defective sense organs is considered to be reversed in relation to the knowledge of those with good sense organs. Whatever is grasped by the six undamaged sense organs is understood by the world, and that which is true from the world itself is the remainder.
