By examining the two and so forth and refuting, because you yourselves have promised that a decision must be made between the two, yet you want a meaning that is neither of the two. Like this, examining whether any basis whatsoever has self-nature or not, one must want to make a decision between the two. If there is a third category that is not included in them, then it is not appropriate to examine whether self-nature is existent or non-existent. For example, if there is color, it is like asking whether it is blue or yellow. Like that, making a decision between self-nature existent or non-existent also depends on making a decision between existent or non-existent in general knowables. For example, for truth, making a decision between the one and the many of truth is like depending on making a decision between the one and the many in general. Like that, if a decision is made, then the third category must be eliminated, so wanting a dharma that is neither of the two is nonsense. As it says in the *Refutation of Arguments*: "If self-nature non-existent is reversed, then it will become well-established as self-nature." Therefore, saying that. Furthermore, thinking like that, for any dharma, there is no place to make a definite number of eliminating the three categories, so it will only become hesitation. Because distinguishing one of existent or non-existent and so forth does not completely distinguish the other. If it is thought that there are no three categories in some aspects such as is or is not, then it will be completely the same in existent or non-existent. That kind of thing seems to be a misunderstanding of the mere words of "neither existent nor non-existent" spoken in the Madhyamaka texts. If you think like that, just as you cannot say "existent" or "non-existent," you also cannot say "neither existent nor non-existent," because that is how it is said in all four possibilities. Therefore, the *Root Wisdom* says: "To say 'exists' is to grasp permanence, to say 'does not exist' is to view annihilation, therefore, in both existent and non-existent, the wise do not abide." What is said here is not just about existent or non-existent, but it clearly explains that if one accepts that things are established by self-nature, it will become a view of permanence and annihilation. As the *Clear Words* says: Holding to existent and non-existent in the previous treatises is explained as viewing things as existent and non-existent, and after that it says: Also, why is it that if there is a view of things and things not existing, it will necessarily become a view of permanence and annihilation? It is like this: Whatever exists by its own nature, that is not non-existent, so it is permanent.

If it is said, "Previously existed, now does not exist," then it would lead to nihilism. If something is said to exist by its own nature, since its own nature does not change, it is never non-existent. Even so, if one affirms that it exists by its own nature, it would lead to eternalism. If one affirms the own-nature of a thing when it previously existed, and then affirms that it later decayed and therefore does not exist, then it would lead to nihilism. Thus, affirming existence by its own nature is considered eternalism, and thinking that the previous own-nature later decayed is considered nihilism. But it does not speak of merely existing or merely decaying. Buddhapālita also said: Saying "exists" and saying "does not exist" (there seems to be a mistake here) are the views of eternalism and nihilism. Among them, "Whatever exists by its own nature," etc., clearly explains how one falls into eternalism and nihilism. In short, if someone says and refutes that emptiness without own-nature is not the true emptiness, then a Dharma-abandoner who abandons the Prajñāpāramitā will fall into the lower realms. Even if one believes in no own-nature, but if one thinks, "If there is no own-nature, then what exists?" and thereby thinks that all dharmas are not absolutely existent, then one will fall into the abyss of nihilism. As it is said in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā: "Those who misinterpret emptiness are destroyed by their small wisdom." In the commentary Prasannapadā, it says: "If someone thinks that everything is empty, that is, everything is non-existent, then at that time this becomes a wrong view. As it is said in the sutra: 'If one wrongly grasps this Dharma, the unwise will also be destroyed. One who views non-existence in this way will sink into impurity.'" If one does not want to slander everything, then how can these things become emptiness even if they are taken as objects? Therefore, the meaning of no own-nature is not the meaning of emptiness. Therefore, this will definitely become abandoning emptiness, and having abandoned it in this way, one will definitely fall into the lower realms due to the karma of being impoverished by Dharma. As it is said in the Ratnāvalī: "Furthermore, if one wrongly grasps this view, a foolish and arrogant person, being of evil nature due to abandonment, will go to Avīci hell." It is for this reason. If we previously affirmed things, and then...
