Therefore. Among them, we do not say that there is no karma and result, etc., which is to eliminate saying that there is nothing. If one thinks that there is no karma and result, etc., one will become a nihilist, so we do not think so. If asked what do you say then? The answer is, establishing or thinking that these karma and results, etc., have no self-nature, saying this is to eliminate saying that there is existence. Without self-nature, doing and being done are not reasonable, so the fault is there, which means that even if you say that I do not say that there is nothing, I say that there is no self-nature, but still cannot abandon the previously mentioned fault, that is, if there is no self-nature, cause and effect are not reasonable, this is the argument of those who say that there are things. According to his point of view, there is no difference between no self-nature and nothing, so he argues in this way. The answer to this is that the function of cause producing effect, etc., is not allowed for those who have self-nature, only for those who have no self-nature, these are allowed. In the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, it is also said: I do not say that there is no thing, because I say dependent arising. Are you a person who says that there are things? No, because I am precisely the one who says dependent arising. What do you say? I say dependent arising. Then what is the meaning of dependent arising? It is the meaning of no self-nature, that is, the meaning of not being produced by self-nature, and the meaning of the production of fruits with self-nature similar to illusions, mirages, images, Gandharva cities, emanations, dreams, etc., and the meaning of emptiness and selflessness. In this way, thinking of dependent arising, it shows the situation of eliminating saying the two extremes of existence and non-existence of things. Among them, the meaning of dependent arising is explained as not being produced by self-nature, which is to eliminate saying that things exist. And showing the production of fruits similar to illusions, etc., as the meaning of dependent arising, this is to eliminate saying that things do not exist. Therefore, things have two usages, one refers to self-nature, and the other refers to the ability to function. The thing said by those who say that things exist refers to the thing that is established by self-nature. The thing said by those who say that things do not exist refers to the thing that can function. When eliminating these two, self-nature is prevented, and it is like an illusion.

This is to show that such cause and effect exist. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Four Hundred, it says: "Is there no memory of past objects?" Who would say that there is not? We are not negating dependent arising. If it is ascertained as it exists, then what is called memory is false, and only falsehood arises in meaning. The school itself establishes it in this way. Therefore, the object of memory is past things. If it exists by its own nature, then its memory is based on the meaning of existence, and if it is established by its own nature, then when the past thing has no self-nature, the memory based on it also has no self-nature. Therefore, it can be established that it is false. The so-called falsehood is not different in meaning from selflessness and dependent arising, and the meaning of the non-existence of things is not the meaning of falsehood. Past things do not not exist in any way, because they can be remembered, and because their fruit can be seen. Nor do they exist by their own nature, because it would lead to permanence, and it would lead to real grasping. Thus, these past things, etc., are neither completely non-existent nor established by their own nature, and the meaning of falsehood or falsity is the meaning of dependent arising, not the meaning of the non-existence of things. If one thinks that these dharmas are established by their own nature, then one is speaking of things, or falling into the extreme of existence. Merely saying that they exist is not speaking of things, or saying that they exist. Similarly, if one thinks that inner and outer things are non-things empty of the power to perform functions, then one is speaking of the non-existence of things, or falling into the extreme of non-existence. Saying that they have no self-nature does not lead to the extreme of non-existence. Thus, if one does not distinguish between complete non-existence and lack of self-nature, and between being established by one's own nature and merely existing, and wants to prevent falling into the extremes of existence and non-existence, they will say: "We do not say that it does not exist, but it is not existence." "We do not say that it exists, but it is not non-existence." Relying only on speech, one only speaks of contradictions, and does not speak of the meaning of the Middle Way at all. When refuting other views, the existence or non-existence of self-nature
