If one thinks there is nothing, it becomes a nihilistic view, but since we do not think these things exist from the beginning, what kind of annihilation would it be? "Previously existed, now does not exist," therefore it would fall into annihilation. Such a view is called annihilationism. The Prasannapadā also says: Yogis, merely by not understanding the conventional truth, realize that arising phenomena have no inherent existence, and thus realize that their emptiness is the characteristic of the ultimate truth, which does not fall into either extreme. For if something does not exist now, then what would exist at that time? Thus, since the nature of things was not previously observed, it is not understood as non-existent later. If one thinks that this is acceptable, it is not reasonable. If annihilationism requires the prior acceptance of the things that will be annihilated, then even the Lokāyata materialists would not first acknowledge past and future lives and karma and its effects, and then say that they do not exist. Because they do not think these things exist from the beginning, they would fall into the fault of not being annihilationists. Therefore, "Previously existed, now does not exist," therefore it would fall into annihilation. This means that for those who believe that things have an inherent nature established by themselves, the views of permanence and annihilation will inevitably arise. If one thinks that the nature does not change at any time, then it becomes a view of permanence. If one thinks that things that existed previously will be destroyed later, then it becomes a view of annihilation. Therefore, when showing the absence of the annihilationist view that clings to the nature that existed previously as being destroyed later, the reason is that one does not accept that things have an inherent nature established by themselves, not even a particle. However, not all annihilationist views are refuted by this. The different ways in which it differs from the annihilationist view that believes there is no karma and its effects are explained in detail in the Prasannapadā. For example, annihilationism is the belief that there is no karma and its effects and no afterlife, while the Madhyamikas believe that these have no inherent existence, so there is a difference in vows. The Madhyamikas say that karma and its effects are dependently originated, so they have no inherent existence. The nihilists do not believe that karma and its effects are dependently originated, so they do not use this as a reason, but rather use the reason that the sentient beings of the present have not seen coming here from the previous world, and going from here to the next world.

There is a great difference in reasoning when speaking of non-existence. As it says in the Clear Words: Here, some argue that there is no difference between the Madhyamikas and the nihilists, because the Madhyamikas say that all virtuous and non-virtuous actions, agents, results, and all worlds are empty of inherent existence. And the nihilists also say that these do not exist. Therefore, the Madhyamikas are no different from the nihilists. But this is not the case, because the Madhyamikas are those who speak of dependent origination, and because of dependent origination, they say that all things, such as this world and the next, are without inherent existence. The nihilists, however, do not understand that things like the next world do not exist through emptiness of inherent existence because they are dependently originated. What do they do? They inherently fixate on the appearance of things in this world, and because they do not see things coming from the next world to this world, or going from this world to the next, they deny other things that are similar to the things they fixate on in this world. So it is said. If the reasons of the Madhyamikas and the annihilationists are not the same, even so, because they both recognize that karma and its effects and past and future lives do not have inherent existence established by their own nature, they think that this view of no inherent existence is the same. If you think so, this is also not the same. Because they think that no inherent existence is complete non-existence, they do not accept either of the two truths. But the Madhyamikas accept that karma and its effects exist conventionally. As it says in the Clear Words: If that is the case, they recognize that the inherent nature of things is non-existent, that is, non-existence. Therefore, is there any similarity from the perspective of this view for the time being? No, because the Madhyamikas accept existence conventionally, but they do not accept it, so it is not the same. So it is said. Therefore, this shows that those who think of the Madhyamikas as not accepting karma and its effects even conventionally have the same view as the Lokayatas. Here, the reason why the teacher is different from the annihilationists is that he has acceptance and I do not, and he does not say that.
