said. They think these do not exist, but we do not say that they do not exist in that way, but think that they exist, instead of not saying so. Instead, it is said that there is no self-nature, and dependent origination is given as the reason for it, and it is said that all these establishments exist in the conventional truth. If karma and its effects, etc., do not have self-nature established by their own nature, that is reasonable. But nihilists also think that these do not exist, so thinking that these have no self-nature, are they the same as Madhyamikas in terms of having no self-nature? This is very different. For example, for a person who steals something, one person, without knowing that he stole it, says in a false tone that this person stole something. Another person sees the thief stealing something and says that this person stole something. Just as these two people say that this person stole something, although the thief also stole something, But one is lying and the other is telling the truth, so they are not the same. As it is said in the Clear Words: "If things are the same, if things are the same in being unestablished, even so, because the realizers are different, they are not the same. For example, for a person who steals something, one person, without knowing the truth, because he is not friendly with him, slanders him and says that this person stole something, making false accusations against him. Another person exposes him after seeing it with his own eyes. Even if things have no difference, because the realizers are different, for one person, this is called lying, and for another person, this is called telling the truth. For one person, if one observes truthfully, it becomes not famous and blameless, but for another person, it is not like that. Here, when one understands and proclaims the self-nature of things as they are, together with those who do not understand the self-nature of things as they are, their knowledge and speech are not the same." Thus it is said. This prevents some people from understanding no self-nature, thinking that karma and its effects, etc., are negated by reason, so that cause and effect cannot be established in their own system, even so, they mistakenly enter the conventional truth of appearance, but claim to have obtained the view of emptiness without error, this is also well prevented. Therefore, emptiness is not falling into useless emptiness, but is without self-nature

Therefore, there needs to be a basis for establishing causality. As it says in the commentary to the Four Hundred, "Thus, what is the meaning? For the born, there is coming, and for the ceased, there is no going. Therefore, it definitely has no inherent nature." If it has no inherent nature, then what is there? It can be said that there exists the nature that arises dependently, which is caused by all afflictions and purifications. This clearly answers the question, "If there is no inherent nature, then what is there?" Master Sangye Gyang also clearly distinguished the difference between existence and establishment by inherent nature and gave an answer. In the commentary to the Twentieth Chapter, it says, "Question: If time does not exist, and cause, effect, and aggregation do not exist, then what else exists? Therefore, this is actually saying that there is no existence." Answer: It is not so. Just as you think that time and so on exist from their own nature, that is completely unreasonable. But they are established by dependence." Therefore, this denies that establishment by one's own inherent nature, as desired by the proponents of entities, is unreasonable, but because it says, "They are established by dependence," it is saying that dependent arising exists. Therefore, if one distinguishes between the existence or non-existence of inherent nature and the four alternatives of existence and non-existence, countless wrong conceptions will be reversed, and there will be no confusion that the reasoning that refutes the existence of inherent nature can refute mere existence. Therefore, the main way in which Madhyamikas answer the learned proponents of entities is through these four alternatives, which have been explained a little here. Second, revealing that one cannot be refuted by statements of harm, divided into four points: examining whether or not one can withstand analysis by reason and refuting accordingly, thus one cannot refute; examining whether or not one is established by valid cognition and refuting accordingly, thus one cannot refute; examining whether or not the four alternatives of arising are established and refuting accordingly, thus one cannot refute; and revealing that negating all four alternatives of the existence or non-existence of entities, etc., cannot serve as harm. The first point is: For phenomena such as form, examining them properly and truthfully in terms of whether they exist or do not exist, whether they arise or do not arise, etc., in the way that they truly exist, is what is called the reasoning that examines suchness and the reasoning that ultimately examines. This reasoning examines form, etc.
