Refutation: Similarly, if there were a birth established by its own nature, it would be certain to be found by the reasoning of the Madhyamikas. If birth is not found when searching, this means that what is refuted is the self-nature or the birth established by its own nature. How could birth itself be refuted? Similarly, in the commentary on the Four Hundred, it says: "Therefore, when analyzed in this way by reasoning, since the sense organs, objects, and consciousnesses do not have the nature of existence, they are not established by their own nature. If these were established by their own nature, then, in that case, when analyzed by valid cognition, how could one apprehend the very self that exists by its own nature, which abides most clearly? One cannot apprehend it, therefore it is established that it is empty of self-nature." This is clearly stated there. These conventional truths such as form and sound, even if we allow them to exist, they cannot be established by merely examining them or by reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not. Therefore, one should not apply reasoning to examine them. This is what the teacher has repeatedly said. Moreover, after conducting a rational investigation, if reason does not find it, to think that those conventional truths are destroyed is to be unskilled in establishing conventional truths. He has said this many times. If the reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not could refute these, then one should apply very thorough rational investigation to these conventional truths such as form and feeling. But such a thing is prohibited in every way in this teacher's treatises. Therefore, to take the meaning of not finding something with the reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not as the meaning of being harmed by reasoning is to stray greatly from the tenets of Madhyamaka. Similarly, the samadhi of the noble ones also does not see the arising and ceasing of forms, etc., but it certainly does not see that arising and ceasing, etc., do not exist. The reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not also does not find arising, etc., but it does not measure that arising and ceasing, etc., do not exist. Therefore, not distinguishing between what cannot be examined by reasoning and what is harmed by reasoning, not distinguishing between the wisdom of the noble ones' samadhi not seeing arising and ceasing and seeing that they do not exist, and not distinguishing between the reasoning that examines whether self-nature exists or not not finding arising and ceasing and finding that arising and ceasing do not exist, but rather taking them as one, this situation, not to mention present people, some scholars of the past also made mistakes.

Those who possess intelligence, born from illusory appearances, should examine carefully and distinguish these clearly. Thus, I do not consider mundane knowledge to be more powerful than valid cognition with a truly existent object, nor do I consider mundane knowledge to harm valid cognition with a truly existent object. However, if one believes that by merely examining mundane forms, feelings, etc., with reasoning that investigates only that, and if one cannot find them through reasoning, then those reasonings can refute it, then not only does this not refute the other, but the one who refutes in this way is harmed by the valid cognition of worldly convention. As it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "If the world does not harm you, then rely on the world itself to refute this. You and the world should argue here, and afterwards I will rely on powerful strength." And in the commentary there, it is also said: "We are in a very difficult situation in order to reverse the worldly convention, please eliminate the worldly convention! If the world does not harm you, I will also establish emptiness for you. The world is indeed harmful." Because of this. Among them, we are in a very difficult situation in order to reverse the worldly convention, which means that in order to purify the mistaken objects of the eye consciousness and the mistaken appearances of objects such as forms, we strive on the path, so we do not consider these to be what reason should refute, but rather as objects of refutation for the mastery of the path. You eliminate the worldly convention, etc., which means that if the Madhyamika refutes the inherently existent other-powered nature, I will also refute your convention with reasoning, and after saying this, just as I am able to refute the inherently existent other-powered nature, if you are able to refute the convention with reasoning, I will also be your friend, meaning that if reasoning can refute it, I do not need to cultivate the path in order to reverse this, so I hope so, thus showing that conventional truth cannot be refuted by reasoning. Not only can it not be refuted, but if it is prevented, it will be harmed by worldly convention, because it is said that way, so for such reasoning, mundane knowledge will harm it, so it is also considered to be more powerful than those.
