The four noble truths would then become contradictory to you. Thus, and so on. Therefore, if there is no self-established nature, what else can be said to exist? This statement clearly reveals a failure to distinguish between the absence of self-nature in a sprout and the absence of a sprout itself. Consequently, the existence of a sprout and the self-establishment of a sprout are also not distinguished. If it exists, it is said to exist by its own nature; if self-establishment does not exist, it is said to not exist, which is evident. If it is not so, then why would one say that the reasoning that refutes self-establishment also refutes mere existence, arising, ceasing, and so on? Thus, as long as sprouts and other phenomena are considered to exist, they are said to exist by self-establishment. If self-establishment is completely absent, then it is said to be completely absent, which undoubtedly falls into two extremes, no different from those who assert substantial existence. As the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses states: "According to those who assert substantial existence, as long as the existence of that entity remains, its self-nature also remains. When it is separated from its self-nature, at that time, that entity is completely absent in all respects, like the horns of a donkey. Therefore, it does not transcend the two assertions. All these manifest assertions become difficult to establish." This is clearly stated. If one does not understand the distinction between the presence or absence of self-nature and the four possibilities of existence and non-existence, one will undoubtedly fall into two extremes, and therefore not understand the meaning of the Middle Way free from extremes. Thus, when self-establishment becomes completely absent, the dharma also becomes completely absent. In that case, there is no basis for establishing cause and effect in self-empty emptiness, and thus one falls into the extreme of annihilation. Furthermore, if one asserts that the dharma exists, one must acknowledge self-establishment. In that case, even though cause and effect lack self-nature, it is impossible to have the appearance of illusion, and thus one falls into the extreme of permanence. Therefore, by realizing that all dharmas lack self-establishment from the very beginning, not even a particle, one does not fall into the extreme of existence. Even so, sprouts and other phenomena do not become empty non-entities due to their functional capacity, but each…

If there is a definite understanding that there is power to do things, then it is abandoning the extreme of non-existence. The distinction between selflessness and non-existence is also clearly stated in the Prasannapadā, as it says: If you thus establish all things as selfless, then all that the Blessed One said, that the ripening of one's own deeds is experienced by oneself, will be refuted by this method, and because you slander karma and its results, you will become the chief of the nihilists. It should be said: We are not nihilists, we are those who prevent the two statements of existence and non-existence, and thus clarify the non-dual path to the city of Nirvana. We do not say that karma, the agent, and the result, etc., do not exist, but we establish that these are selfless. If one thinks that because selfless things should not have function, therefore the fault remains, that is not the case, because we do not see things with self-nature having function, but only see selfless things having function. Thus it is said. If it is selflessness, then the negation of self-nature will eliminate the arising of ripening from karma, the proponents of reality say this, which is to negate cause and effect with the reasoning of negating self-nature, and there is no difference between their wishes. If cause and effect are negated, one will become the chief of the nihilists, which is agreed upon by both the Madhyamikas and the proponents of reality. However, the Madhyamikas do not want to negate cause and effect, while the proponents of reality think that if self-nature is eliminated, then cause and effect must also be negated, therefore they call the Madhyamikas nihilists or annihilationists. Most of those who claim to be Tibetan Madhyamikas seem to agree with the proponents of reality that if self-nature is eliminated, then reasoning must also negate cause and effect. However, they regard negating cause and effect with reasoning as the view of the Madhyamikas and seem to approve of it. In response to that dispute, our answer is: We are not nihilists, but we clarify the path to liberation by eliminating the statements of existence and non-existence. Thus it is said, the way to eliminate the statements of existence and non-existence will be explained later.
