If things existed by their own nature, then they would exist even without causes and conditions. But that is not the case, therefore they are without inherent existence. Therefore, it is explained as emptiness. Similarly, my words also arise dependently, therefore they are without inherent existence. Since they are without inherent existence, it is reasonable to call them emptiness. Just as pots and cloths, etc., arise dependently and are therefore empty of inherent existence, yet they are able to hold honey, water, and milk, and are able to take, and are able to protect from cold, wind, and sun, so too, my words arise dependently and are therefore without inherent existence, yet they are able to thoroughly establish the non-inherent existence of things. Therefore, it is not right to say, "Since your words themselves are without inherent existence, it is not reasonable to negate the inherent existence of all things." That is to say, if something is established by its own nature, it does not depend on causes and conditions; if it depends on causes and conditions, it is pervaded by non-inherent existence, which is a relationship of following and reversing. It has been very clearly stated that words without inherent existence are able to perform the activities of negation and affirmation. What need is there to say that the defiled and purified dharmas that arise and cease in dependence on causes and conditions, and the two, dependent arising and non-inherent existence, converge on the same basis? Such dependent arising itself is the supreme reason for realizing non-inherent existence, and this should be known as the special characteristic of only the Madhyamika scholars. If one assumes that arising dependently and ceasing dependently are necessarily established by their own essence, and then negates dependent arising of arising and ceasing with reasoning that negates inherent existence, then it is like a god falling into a demon, and it becomes a great obstacle to truly realizing the meaning of Madhyamika. In this way, if one draws the conclusion that there is not even a particle of inherent existence in phenomena that is established by its own essence, then the relationship of cause and effect must be transferred to others' tenets, etc., without being able to draw a conclusion from one's own tenet. If one draws a conclusion from one's own tenet well on cause and effect, then one will not be able to draw a conclusion from one's own tenet on non-inherent existence. Therefore, there arises what is called taking the meaning of non-inherent existence.

Then, know that you have not yet found the view of Madhyamaka. In order to obtain the view, one should take as a basis the pure precepts that have been vowed to be kept, strive in various ways to accumulate merit and purify obscurations, rely on the wise, and diligently engage in listening and thinking. Like this, the two collections that lead to certainty about appearance and emptiness, merely going to the extremes of existence and non-existence, considering that the view of Madhyamaka is very difficult to obtain. In the twenty-fourth chapter of the Root Wisdom Treatise, it says: "Therefore, the Buddha, knowing that this Dharma is difficult to understand for the weak, turned away from teaching the Dharma." And also in the Precious Garland, it says: "For a while, this body is impure, coarse and an object of manifest experience, when it always appears, it does not abide in the mind, at that time the holy Dharma has no place to abide, subtle and profound, not manifest, how can that profound one easily enter the mind? Because this Dharma is profound, beings find it difficult to understand, the Buddha understood, therefore the Buddha, after becoming enlightened, turned away from teaching the Dharma." The scriptures and treatises say that it is very difficult to realize. If it is not like that, some qualified treatises say that the absence of inherent existence is determined by the reasoning that analyzes whether a vase and so on are one or different from their own parts, if one misunderstands the meaning of that. Analyzing the vase and so on, looking at which is the mouth and neck and so on, which are its own parts, and finding that none of them are the vase, then one becomes certain that there is no vase. Then, analyzing the analyzer in the same way, one will become certain that the analyzer also does not exist. At that time, if the analyzer cannot be found, who would think that there is no vase and so on? So, like saying that it is neither existent nor non-existent, like this kind of reasoning that seems like reasoning, if one leads the wrong certainty astray, and thinks that one has found the view, this seems to be the easiest. Therefore, those who have intelligence should say that the meaning of emptiness is the meaning of dependent arising from the definitive scriptures and the Madhyamaka treatises that explain their meaning, which is the characteristic of the wise Madhyamikas. In particular, the teachers Buddhapalita and Chandrakirti completely and without omission explained the intention of the holy father and sons (Nagarjuna and Aryadeva).
